Where can you book a hygiene appointment in Sheffield?

Hygiene appointments are offered at Deepcar Dental Care, 334 Manchester Road, in the village of Deepcar. Deepcar is part of the City of Sheffield: its post town is Sheffield, its postcode district is S36 and its dialling code is 0114.

The practice lies north-west of Sheffield city centre rather than in it. Check-ups and other routine care are covered on our page about general dentistry in Sheffield.

Can you book a hygiene appointment without registering as a patient?

Yes. A hygiene appointment can be booked without registering as a patient, and online through the booking portal. At Deepcar Dental Care, you can book directly with our dental therapist, without seeing a dentist first.

Seeing a member of the dental team without seeing a dentist first is what the General Dental Council (GDC) calls direct access. Our guide to booking hygiene care directly sets out what GDC guidance says about it.

Our dental hygiene page has more about hygiene appointments. Before you book, our page on working out how often you need a hygiene appointment explains how UK and European guidance set the interval between visits.

How long is the drive from parts of Sheffield, and where do you park?

By car, the drive from the districts in the table ranges from around 5 minutes to around 30 minutes. The table gives one figure for each named district: the shortest drive from the middle of that area, so traffic can make the drive longer.

Parking directly outside the practice is free. Deepcar Dental Care is on the ground floor and is wheelchair accessible, and the map on this page pins its location on Manchester Road.

Which neighbouring community has its own page?

Stocksbridge has a page of its own. Deepcar sits on the eastern edge of that town, in the Stocksbridge and Upper Don ward of Sheffield. Our page on dental care for Stocksbridge sets out the treatments on offer at the practice, around 5 minutes from Stocksbridge by car.

What gum care is offered at Deepcar Dental Care?

Gum care at Deepcar Dental Care includes gum disease screening and treatment, air polishing and cosmetic gum work. The services offered include:

  • BPE (basic periodontal examination) screening at every examination, and full six-point periodontal charting
  • non-surgical periodontal therapy, also called deep cleaning, and root surface debridement under local anaesthetic
  • treatment of advanced gum disease (severe periodontitis) and regenerative gum treatment
  • gum surgery, gum recession treatment and gum grafting
  • gum contouring for cosmetic reasons, carried out with a scalpel
  • air polishing with a Woodpecker unit, using glycine, erythritol and sodium bicarbonate powders chosen to suit the patient
  • halitosis (bad breath) assessment, desensitising treatment and smoking cessation advice

Our page on how gum disease develops explains the condition, and our hygiene and gum treatments index sets out the options in this section.

What does NHS guidance say to do about gum or tooth symptoms?

NHS guidance sorts gum and tooth symptoms by how quickly to act, from non-urgent advice to see a dentist up to calling 999.

As non-urgent advice, NHS guidance says to see a dentist if your gums bleed when you brush your teeth or eat hard foods, your gums are painful and swollen, you have bad breath, or your child has sore, bleeding gums. It gives the same advice for toothache that lasts more than 2 days, does not go away with painkillers, or comes with a high temperature, pain when you bite, red gums, a bad taste in your mouth or a swollen cheek or jaw. It gives these further actions:

  • You or your child has gum disease and other symptoms such as very sore and swollen gums, teeth becoming loose or falling out, ulcers or red patches in your mouth, or a lump in your mouth or on your lip: ask for an urgent dentist appointment.
  • Toothache with swelling around your eye or neck, or swelling in your mouth or neck that makes it difficult to breathe, swallow or speak: go to A&E. Do not drive yourself: ask someone to drive you, or call 999 for an ambulance.

If you do not have a dentist or cannot get an emergency appointment, call 111 or visit 111 online.

How do you find out about cost?

The practice's current fee list says all its prices are “from” prices, based on individual clinical needs. You can call 0114 288 2121 with a question about cost before you book.

A membership plan exists at the practice, covering 2 examinations and 2 hygiene visits per year.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Deepcar from Sheffield city centre?

Deepcar is about 9.5 miles (15.3 km) north-west of Sheffield city centre, south-west of where the River Don meets the Little Don River. The practice is at 334 Manchester Road in the village, so a hygiene appointment here is within the City of Sheffield but outside the city centre.

Which postcode districts do Deepcar and nearby parts of Sheffield fall in?

Deepcar Dental Care is in S36, a Sheffield postcode district. S36 also covers Stocksbridge and Penistone, among other places, and parts of it lie in Barnsley borough. Oughtibridge, Chapeltown, High Green and Wharncliffe Side are in S35, while Hillsborough, Wadsley and Stannington are in S6.

Can you check a dental professional's GDC registration by town?

Yes. The General Dental Council publishes its registers online free of charge, and anyone can search them by name, by town or by both, so Sheffield can be the town you search. A public entry shows status, registration number, registrant type, date first registered, current registration period and qualifications.

How much time should you allow for a hygiene appointment if you drive from Sheffield city centre?

Allow for a 30 to 60 minute hygiene appointment plus the drive both ways. By car, the practice is around 15 minutes from Sheffield city centre, and traffic can make the drive longer, so leave extra time if you travel at a busy time of day.
