Where to park when you arrive
Parking is free and directly outside the practice on Manchester Road, with more space on the side roads. There is no barrier, no ticket and no time limit. The surgeries are on the ground floor and wheelchair accessible, so from a parked car to the chair is a flat walk of a few steps. If you have driven in with a child holding a knocked-out tooth, pull up outside and come straight in; reception knows what to do with the milk.
Getting here by bus, tram or train
Deepcar has no railway station; the nearest are Chapeltown and Sheffield. Buses are the practical option. Stagecoach and First services on the Sheffield to Stocksbridge corridor run along Manchester Road and stop within a short walk of the door. From Sheffield city centre the 57 via Hillsborough is the direct route. The Supertram Yellow line ends at Middlewood, from where the same bus or a short taxi ride brings you up the valley. From Barnsley, Penistone and Rotherham, public transport connections are slower and a taxi is usually quicker if you are in pain.
Why a 30-minute drive often beats waiting for a local slot
The arithmetic is simple. A practice near you that can see you on Thursday is three days away. We are 30 minutes away and hold emergency slots every day from 8am to 8pm, including weekends and most bank holidays. Around eight in ten emergency patients are treated the day they call. A toothache does not improve in three days: the nerve dies, the abscess grows, and a filling turns into a root canal. Half an hour on the A616 is cheaper than the wait.
The examination is £30 including X-rays, the same for everyone, and treatment is quoted in writing before it starts. Patients from Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster tell us that the fixed price, and the fact that they were treated rather than sent away with tablets, is why they come back. Our reviews are largely from people who made that first trip. What the appointment itself involves is in same-day emergency appointment, and the full price list is in emergency dental fees.
What to do while you are travelling
- 01Let someone else drive if the pain is bad or you have had a knock to the head. Sit in the passenger seat and ring us from the car so the slot is held.
- 02Knocked-out adult tooth: in milk, or tucked inside the cheek, never in water or a tissue. Tell reception the time it came out; the clock matters.
- 03Take paracetamol and, if it is safe for you, ibuprofen, as directed on the packet, before you set off, so they are working by the time you arrive.
- 04Bring the broken piece or the crown in a bag, a list of your medicines, and a way to pay.
- 05Avoid eating on the way. A numb mouth and a recent meal do not mix, and food packed into a broken tooth makes the examination harder.
- 06For swelling, a cold compress on the outside of the cheek; nothing hot, and nothing placed on the gum.
Further afield: Doncaster, Huddersfield and the Peak villages
Patients also come from Doncaster, via the M18 and M1 to junction 35A and then the A616, from Huddersfield, straight down the A616 through Holmfirth and the Flouch, and from the villages on the edge of the Peak west of Stocksbridge. Those are longer drives, and people make them for the same reasons: a slot today, a price in writing, and a dentist who treats the problem rather than postponing it.
If your area is not listed, ring anyway. The question is not where you live but whether we can see you today, and the answer is usually yes. The emergency dentist page has the full picture on hours, prices and who will treat you, and weekend and out-of-hours care explains what happens if you are setting off after 8pm.
Questions, answered
Common questions
Which areas do you cover for emergency dental care?
All of Sheffield, plus Stocksbridge, Oughtibridge, Penistone, Barnsley, Rotherham and further afield including Doncaster and Huddersfield. There is no catchment; anyone who can get to Deepcar can be seen.
Is there parking at Deepcar Dental Care?
Yes. Free parking is directly outside the practice on Manchester Road, with more on the side streets, and the surgeries are on the ground floor.
Can I get to Deepcar by public transport?
By bus, yes. Sheffield to Stocksbridge services stop on Manchester Road near the practice, and the 57 runs from the city centre via Hillsborough. The Supertram ends at Middlewood; there is no railway station in Deepcar.
How long does it take to drive from Barnsley or Rotherham?
About 30 minutes from Barnsley on the A628 and A616 via Penistone, and about 35 minutes from Rotherham using the M1 to junction 35A and then the A616.
Is it worth driving 30 minutes for an emergency dentist?
If the alternative is waiting days, usually yes. Dental problems get worse, not better, while you wait, and being examined and treated today for a fixed, quoted price is what most of our travelling patients say made the trip worthwhile.
Do you charge more for patients from outside Sheffield?
No. The emergency examination is £30 including X-rays for everyone, and treatment prices are the same wherever you live. The only additional charge is the out-of-hours supplement after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends.
