Holmfirth to Deepcar: the Holme Valley's quickest route to a same-day dentist

Holmfirth and the villages around it, Netherthong, Hepworth, Scholes, Hade Edge, have a Huddersfield postcode and a Kirklees dentist, but the road out of the valley that matters for us runs the other way. From New Mill the A616 climbs over the moor and drops to Stocksbridge in a quarter of an hour, and we are at the bottom of that road. Half an hour is less than many Holmfirth residents spend getting into Huddersfield on a wet Saturday. What people come for is the day and the hour: a slot today, on a Sunday, or at 7pm after work, from a practice that treats around eight in ten of its emergency callers the day they ring. The number is 0114 288 2121, there is no registration, and the overnight line is answered by the principal dentist.

What NHS 111 and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary offer the Holme Valley

NHS 111 is the route to NHS urgent dental care from the Holme Valley; the West Yorkshire dental triage is available 24 hours a day and offers appointments where there is capacity, which may mean Huddersfield, Dewsbury or further. Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in Lindley is the nearest A&E, about 25 minutes from Holmfirth, with a new emergency department that opened in May 2024. Use it when a dental infection has stopped being only dental: swelling spreading down the neck or closing the eye, difficulty swallowing or breathing, fever with facial swelling, a possible broken jaw, or bleeding that will not stop with pressure. For everything else, from a throbbing molar to a crown that has come off, a hospital cannot do the repair, and a dentist can.

Through New Mill, over the tops, past Langsett: the drive in detail

From Holmfirth town centre take the A635 Penistone Road east to New Mill, where you meet the A616 at the crossroads. Turn right towards Sheffield and follow the A616 through Jackson Bridge, past the turn for Hepworth, up past the Victoria pub and over the moor to the Flouch roundabout. Straight across, down past Langsett reservoir and along the Stocksbridge bypass; take the Deepcar exit, follow Carr Road down into the village and turn right on Manchester Road. Number 334 has free parking in front. Around 13 miles and 25 to 30 minutes. The moor top between Hepworth and the Flouch is the first place to ice in winter; in snow, ring us before leaving and we will tell you what the road is doing.

Bus and train from Holmfirth, honestly described

The First 314 bus links Holmfirth with Huddersfield roughly hourly, and South Pennine Community Transport runs the 90 and 91 from Holmfirth bus station to Penistone a few times a day, from where the 23 or a taxi covers the last 15 minutes to Deepcar. It can be done, but the connections are thin; most Holmfirth patients drive or ask a neighbour to. If you are stuck, say so when you ring and we will try to time the appointment around the buses.

Crowns that come off, teeth that ache with cold, dentures that split

Holmfirth's calls lean towards teeth that have been repaired before:

  • A crown or bridge that has come away, often intact, sometimes with a piece of tooth still inside it. See recementing a crown.
  • A tooth that twinges with cold tea and now lingers for half a minute afterwards, which points to an inflamed nerve rather than simple sensitivity. See severe toothache.
  • A denture cracked across the middle or a clasp snapped off. See dentures.

A crown that comes off cleanly can usually go straight back on with new cement at the same visit, after we have checked the tooth underneath and the fit. If the tooth has broken inside the crown, or decay has hollowed it, re-cementing would only postpone the problem, so we will show you the X-ray and talk through a new crown or, occasionally, taking the tooth out. If you have the crown, bring it, in a bag or a clean pot, and do not try to glue it in yourself.

One examination fee, then choices with prices attached

You pay £30 for the examination and X-rays, and the rest is a decision made with prices in front of you: re-cementing a crown, a temporary filling, an extraction or the first stage of a root canal, each written down before it starts. There is an extra charge after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends. Details are on emergency dental fees, and the order of the visit is on same-day emergency appointment.

Questions, answered

Questions from Holmfirth patients

How long does Holmfirth to Deepcar really take?

Twenty-five to thirty minutes in normal conditions by the A616. It is one road almost the whole way, which is why it is quicker than the mileage suggests.

Is Huddersfield Royal Infirmary or a dentist the right call for a swollen face?

If the swelling is spreading, your eye is closing, swallowing is hard or you have a fever, go to the Infirmary. If it is sore but not spreading, a dentist can drain it and deal with the tooth the same day.

Can you put my crown back on today?

Usually, if the tooth under it is sound and the crown still fits. Bring it with you. If the tooth has broken, we will explain the options before doing anything.

Do you see people from Hepworth, Scholes and Hade Edge?

Yes, and they are slightly closer than Holmfirth itself, as they sit beside the A616. Hepworth to Deepcar is about 20 minutes.

What happens if it snows on the Flouch road?

The A616 is gritted and rarely closed, but it can be slow. Phone before you set off; if the road is bad we will move your slot rather than have you drive in it.

Will I have to come back to Deepcar to finish treatment?

Only if you want to. An emergency visit deals with the pain; the follow-up can be with your Holmfirth dentist, and we will send them our notes and X-rays.

I called Friday evening to see if they had emergency appointments due to serious tooth pain. They were very polite and willing to accommodate. Due to me being a 45-minute drive away — the closest dentist I could find on Google that was open — they assured me they would see me when I got there. Upon arrival the staff were so polite and welcoming. The expertise and advice before the procedure was amazing. Definitely worth the trip to get the pain away. 100% recommend them.

Visited today for a private emergency appointment. The practice was very clean and tidy, the staff very friendly and helpful. They really listened to my concerns and put me at ease. Addressed the problem and extracted my tooth — nothing was too much trouble. Swift service — top notch.
