Dronfield sits just over Sheffield's southern boundary, close enough that most people in S18 work, shop or go to hospital in the city already. We are on the far side of it, up the Don valley beyond Hillsborough, which is why the drive is 40 minutes rather than 20. What makes it worth the trip is the timing: a slot today, a Saturday or Sunday, or an evening appointment, with treatment usually done at the same visit. Dronfield's practices, like everyone's, are stretched, and an NHS 111 slot for a Derbyshire address can be in Chesterfield or further south and days away. We keep emergency time open every day, treat around eight in ten emergency callers the day they phone, and the overnight line goes to Dr Ijaz. Dronfield has a Sheffield postcode but is in Derbyshire, which matters for the NHS. Urgent dental triage is through NHS 111 at any hour, and the appointment it offers, if you qualify, comes from the Derby and Derbyshire dental area rather than Sheffield's. Chesterfield Royal Hospital at Calow is about 15 minutes away and has a 24-hour emergency department; the Northern General in Sheffield is similar in time and has a maxillofacial unit. Either is the right place when a dental problem has become a medical one: swelling spreading into the neck or towards the eye, difficulty swallowing or breathing, a high fever with a swollen face, a suspected broken jaw, or bleeding that continues after 30 minutes of pressure. Neither will fill, drain or remove a tooth, so if you have pain without those signs a dentist is where the day should be spent.
The A61 route is the one most Dronfield drivers know: up the bypass to Meadowhead, Chesterfield Road and London Road into the city, round the inner ring road to Penistone Road, past Hillsborough stadium and Middlewood, then the A6102 through Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side to Deepcar; the practice is at 334 Manchester Road, with free parking outside. It is about 17 miles and takes 35 to 45 minutes depending on the city traffic. If the centre is jammed, take the Sheffield Parkway from the ring road out to the M1 at junction 33, go north to 35A, and follow the A616 west to the Deepcar exit; it is longer but often steadier. Coal Aston and Dronfield Woodhouse are a few minutes either side of these times.
Dronfield station has East Midlands Railway trains to Sheffield in about ten minutes, up to two an hour. From Sheffield station take the Yellow tram to Middlewood and the Stagecoach 57 bus up Manchester Road to Deepcar; the whole trip is roughly 70 to 80 minutes. A taxi from Sheffield station covers the last leg in 25 minutes if you would rather not wait.

A cracked tooth is diagnosed as much by story as by X-ray, because a hairline crack does not show on the film. The clue is pain on release: you bite, nothing much happens, you let go, and the tooth flinches. We test each cusp in turn with a small plastic bite stick and shine a light through the tooth to find the line. A crack caught early is held together with a crown, and the tooth lasts; one that has run down into the root cannot be glued, and the honest advice is to take it out before it splits.
