A Wakefield patient driving to us passes the turn for Barnsley on the way, so the trip is not about distance. It is about being seen today, or on a Sunday, or at half past six in the evening, by a dentist who will also fix the problem rather than only diagnose it. Wakefield's own emergency provision is spread across a large district that runs from Ossett to Castleford and Pontefract, and when it is full the next NHS 111 slot may be in Dewsbury or Leeds and a couple of days away. Deepcar Dental Care holds emergency slots every day of the week, treats about eight in ten emergency callers the day they phone, and the overnight number is answered by Dr Ijaz rather than a message service. You do not need to be registered and nobody needs to refer you; ring 0114 288 2121 and mention Wakefield so we allow for the M1.
For NHS urgent dental care, Wakefield uses the West Yorkshire dental triage through NHS 111, available 24 hours a day by phone or online. Appointments, when offered, are at whichever practice across the region has capacity. Pinderfields Hospital on Aberford Road has a 24-hour emergency department and is a major trauma centre, so it is the right destination for a jaw injury as well as for a dental infection that has become dangerous: swelling spreading down the neck or up towards the eye, difficulty swallowing or breathing, a high temperature with a swollen face, or bleeding from a socket that will not stop after half an hour of pressure. What Pinderfields will not do is drain an abscess through a tooth, remove the tooth or replace a filling; that needs a dental chair.
From the city centre take the A636 Denby Dale Road out past the Hepworth gallery to junction 39 of the M1 and head south. Stay on the motorway past junctions 38, 37 and 36, which is Barnsley, and leave at 35A, signed Stocksbridge and Manchester on the A616. Follow the A616 west for about eight miles over Westwood roundabout and past Wortley, then take the Deepcar exit, follow Carr Road down into the village and turn right onto Manchester Road; the practice is at number 334 with free parking outside. Planners give roughly 20 miles and under 30 minutes on an empty motorway; 40 minutes is realistic. From Ossett and Horbury, join at junction 40 and save five minutes; from Pontefract and Castleford, the M62 west to the M1 at junction 42 and then south adds about ten.
Wakefield Westgate has direct trains to Sheffield in around 30 to 45 minutes depending on the service; Kirkgate services are slower. From Sheffield station the Yellow tram to Middlewood and the Stagecoach 57 up Manchester Road bring you to Deepcar in another 45 minutes or so. It is a long way round; a taxi from Sheffield station is 25 minutes if the connection has just gone.

Pain after a filling deserves a proper explanation rather than reassurance. A new filling that is fractionally high changes how the teeth meet, and the tooth is bruised a little more with every bite, which is why it aches at the end of the day and not the start. Adjusting the bite takes a minute and often solves it. Pain that lingers after cold, or wakes you at night, points instead to a nerve that was already inflamed before the filling went in and has not recovered, which needs a different conversation about root canal treatment or extraction. The X-rays and a few simple tests tell the two apart.

Only if it is spreading fast, you have a fever, your eye is closing or swallowing is difficult. Otherwise a dentist can drain it and treat the tooth, which is the part that stops it coming back.
