We will not pretend Worksop is round the corner. Forty-five minutes each way is a real cost in time and fuel, and if a Worksop or Retford practice can see you today you should go to them. People from S80 and S81 make the trip for three reasons: it is a Saturday or Sunday and nothing closer is open; NHS 111 has offered a slot two days away in a town they do not know; or a tooth has been patched twice already and they want it dealt with properly, at one visit, by a practice that publishes its prices. Deepcar Dental Care keeps emergency time open every day of the week, treats about eight in ten emergency callers on the day they phone, and the overnight line is answered by the principal dentist. There is no registration; ring 0114 288 2121, say Worksop, and we will hold a time that suits the drive.
Worksop is in Nottinghamshire, so NHS urgent dental care runs through NHS 111 and the Nottinghamshire dental area, with appointments offered where there is capacity, which may be in Mansfield or Nottingham rather than Bassetlaw. Bassetlaw Hospital on Kilton Hill has a 24-hour emergency department, and it is the right place when an infection has gone beyond the tooth: swelling spreading into the neck or towards the eye, a struggle to swallow or breathe, high fever with facial swelling, or bleeding that continues after half an hour of pressure. The department does not handle major trauma, so a suspected broken jaw after a serious accident is directed to Doncaster Royal Infirmary. For toothache, a broken tooth, a lost crown or a socket that hurts, no emergency department can do the dental work, and the wait there is time you could have spent getting to a dentist.
Take the A57 west out of Worksop past Shireoaks and Anston to the M1 at junction 31, then head north past Sheffield and Meadowhall to junction 35A, signed Stocksbridge and Manchester. Follow the A616 west for about eight miles, leave at the Deepcar exit, come down Carr Road into the village and turn right onto Manchester Road; the practice is at number 334, and the car park in front is free. Planners show about 28 miles and 35 minutes on clear roads; allow 45 to 50, and more if the M1 is slow between Tinsley and Meadowhall in the late afternoon. From Retford add ten minutes; from Dinnington and Anston, which are already near the motorway, take ten off.
Northern runs an hourly train from Worksop to Sheffield taking 26 to 32 minutes. At Sheffield, the Yellow tram to Middlewood and the Stagecoach 57 bus up Manchester Road reach Deepcar in a further 45 minutes or so, or a taxi from the station does it in 25. Allow an hour and a half door to door and check the last train back, which leaves Sheffield late in the evening.
The teeth that come to us from Bassetlaw have usually been troublesome for a while:
An abscess that has been shrunk by antibiotics has not been cured. The bacteria live inside the dead tooth, where no antibiotic can reach them, so each course quietens the swelling and each gap between courses lets it rebuild. The only two ways to end it are to drain the tooth and root-treat it, or to remove it, and the first visit does the part that stops the pain: opening the tooth or lancing the swelling so the pressure drops. For someone driving 45 minutes we try to do as much as is safe at that visit, and we will tell you before you set off whether an extraction on the day is likely from what you describe.
The examination and X-rays cost £30 and take 15 minutes; if it is clear the tooth needs to come out and you are well enough, that can follow immediately, from £120 to £260, or £350 to £450 for a wisdom tooth. Usually, if the X-ray shows a straightforward root and you are medically fit. A very curved root or one close to a nerve is booked as a separate surgical visit, which we will say before you agree to anything.
Possibly, and if so take it. Worksop is under Nottinghamshire for NHS dentistry, so the offered appointment may be in Mansfield or Nottingham and not necessarily today.
If the swelling is spreading, your eye is closing, swallowing is hard or you have a fever, yes. If it is sore but stable, a dentist can drain it and treat the cause the same day.
Yes. Retford is about an hour; Dinnington and Anston are 35 to 40 minutes; Carlton in Lindrick is much the same as Worksop.
