This page is for anyone in Deepcar, Stubbin, Carr Road or the streets off Manchester Road who has a tooth that has finally had enough. No registration is needed. Ring 0114 288 2121, say what is happening, and we will find you the earliest slot that day. Around eight in ten of our emergency patients are treated on the day they phone.
Most of the village can walk here, so something that starts throbbing at 7.45am can be looked at before the school run is over. From Bolsterstone or the far end of the village it is a few minutes by car, with free parking at the door. We are open seven days a week, including most bank holidays, and overnight the emergency line is answered personally by Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, the principal dentist.
Deepcar sits in the far north-west of Sheffield, and the NHS urgent dental route here is the same as for the rest of the city: NHS 111 by phone or online. NHS South Yorkshire is open about the fact that urgent appointments are not available 24 hours a day and that you may need to travel to reach one. Charles Clifford Dental Hospital on Wellesley Road, beside the Hallamshire, runs a free weekday urgent clinic staffed by supervised students, in the morning and early afternoon, roughly 25 minutes from Deepcar.
A&E is for a different kind of problem. Northern General Hospital on Herries Road, about 20 minutes from the village, is the right place if swelling is spreading towards the eye or under the jaw, if swallowing or breathing feels harder than usual, or if bleeding will not stop after half an hour of firm pressure on gauze. The practice is on Manchester Road, the old main road that threads the length of the village between Wharncliffe Side and Stocksbridge, on the Stubbin side of Deepcar. From the Stocksbridge end, keep on Manchester Road past the Carr Road turning for Fox Glen woods and we are a short distance further on. From the Sheffield side, come through Wharncliffe Side on the A6102, which turns into Manchester Road as you enter Deepcar.
Buses are straightforward. The Stagecoach 57 and 57a, the Stocksbridge Flyer, stop on Manchester Road within a short walk of the door, running towards Hillsborough and Sheffield in one direction and Stocksbridge in the other. Deepcar lost its passenger station in 1959, so the bus is the only public transport in the village; the nearest tram is the Middlewood terminus. The surgeries are on the ground floor with level access from the car park.
You will have a 15-minute emergency examination with any X-rays needed, and the dentist will tell you what is wrong before anything else happens. If the tooth can be settled that day, it usually is: a temporary dressing, drainage of an abscess, the first stage of a root canal or an extraction. Deepcar is a working village with a lot of long-standing fillings, and the emergencies follow that pattern. The three we see most often:
Cold sensitivity that lingers for more than half a minute after the cold has gone deserves an examination too, because it points to the nerve rather than the enamel. The nerve inside a tooth lives in a space about the width of a hair, so once it is inflamed there is nowhere for the swelling to go, which is why the pain builds so fast.

No. There is no NHS urgent dental centre in Deepcar or Stocksbridge. NHS 111 will direct you to the nearest available NHS appointment, which may be some distance away. We are private and see anyone, registered or not.
Northern General Hospital on Herries Road, about 20 minutes away, for adults with spreading facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or bleeding that will not stop. Children go to Sheffield Children's Hospital on Western Bank. For toothache without those signs, a dentist is the right place.
Yes. Outside 8am to 8pm the emergency line is answered personally by Dr Ijaz. He can talk you through what to do overnight and book the first slot in the morning.
If it is an adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly in milk if it is dirty and put it back in the socket if you can. If not, keep it in milk and come straight down; the first hour matters most. Baby teeth are never put back. Our knocked-out tooth guide walks you through it.
