Fulwood is closer to Deepcar than it feels, because the route runs north-west along the Rivelin Valley rather than through town: 16.6 kilometres and about 25 minutes from Fulwood Road. Patients from S10 tend to come with a specific need rather than a general one, most often a tooth that has been root treated before and is hurting again, or a nerve that has been grumbling for weeks and has finally flared. Deepcar Dental Care holds emergency slots seven days a week, opens at 8am, closes at 8pm, and has a dentist answering the phone overnight. No registration, no referral. About eight in ten people who ring in pain are treated at that first visit.
For NHS urgent care, Fulwood is well placed. NHS 111 runs dental triage 24 hours a day, although NHS South Yorkshire warns that urgent appointments are not round the clock and may involve travel. Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, on Wellesley Road next to the Royal Hallamshire, is about ten minutes from Fulwood and runs a free weekday urgent clinic staffed by supervised students between 9 and 11am and 2 and 3pm; on a weekday morning it is a genuine alternative to us if you can wait your turn. The Northern General on Herries Road is the adult emergency department for swelling that threatens the eye, the airway or swallowing, for a suspected broken jaw and for uncontrolled bleeding; it does not treat teeth. From Fulwood Road or Crimicar Lane, take Redmires Road west towards Lodge Moor, then drop down Coldwell Lane and across Manchester Road, the A57, onto Rivelin Valley Road, the A6101. Follow the valley to Malin Bridge, continue on Holme Lane and Loxley Road and join Middlewood Road, the A6102, heading north. It becomes Langsett Road South through Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side, then Manchester Road in Deepcar, where the practice is on the right with free parking in front. Route planners give 24 to 25 minutes; the valley road is narrow in places, so allow 30. From Crosspool, join the A57 on Manchester Road and turn onto Rivelin Valley Road at the bottom of the hill. By bus, the 120 along Fulwood Road into town, the tram to Middlewood and the 57 up the valley takes over an hour.

A hot drink that triggers pain lasting more than 10 to 30 seconds after you swallow is the tell-tale of a nerve that will not recover; cold pain that vanishes in a second or two usually will. Often, yes. Re-treatment is done under a dental microscope, which lets the dentist find missed canals and remove old filling material. Whether the tooth is worth saving is decided after X-rays, and sometimes a CBCT scan, at the first visit.
Pain that lingers for more than half a minute after something hot, or that starts on its own at night, points to a nerve that will not recover and needs a root canal or extraction. Brief sensitivity that stops as soon as the trigger goes usually means the nerve is still healthy.
Yes. Both are on the same Rivelin Valley route and a few minutes closer than Fulwood. Lodge Moor patients also have the option of the moor road over Mortimer Road in good weather.
In most cases, yes. Once the inflamed nerve is removed or the abscess drained, the pain that brought you in usually eases within hours, with mild tenderness for a few days that ordinary painkillers, taken as directed on the packet, will manage.
