Glossop is on the wrong side of the hills for us, and we say so first. But the Woodhead Pass turns 25 miles of moor into a 40-minute drive, and for Glossop, Hadfield, Tintwistle and Padfield we are sometimes the nearest practice that can see you today and treat the tooth at the same visit. Glossop's NHS dentistry is run from Greater Manchester, and the urgent dental appointments offered from there are in Tameside, Stockport or the city, which is a similar drive in the other direction with more traffic in it. We are open 8am to 8pm seven days a week, hold emergency slots every day, treat around eight in ten emergency callers on the day they ring, and the overnight line is answered by the principal dentist. There is no registration; call 0114 288 2121, tell us you are coming over the top, and we will check the road at our end before you leave.
Although Glossop is in Derbyshire, its NHS services come under Greater Manchester, so the urgent dental route is the Greater Manchester urgent dental care line, reached through NHS 111, which runs seven days a week from 8am to 10pm and books into practices across the ten boroughs. Tameside General Hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne is Glossop's emergency department, about 25 minutes away; Stepping Hill in Stockport is the alternative. Either is right when a dental infection has become dangerous: swelling spreading down the neck or up towards the eye, trouble swallowing or breathing, a high fever with a swollen face, a suspected broken jaw, or bleeding that continues after 30 minutes of pressure. For pain, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost filling or a crown in your hand, an emergency department cannot do the repair, so the choice is between waiting for an NHS dental slot and driving to one.
From Glossop take the B6105 Woodhead Road through Padfield and along the reservoirs to join the A628; from Hadfield and Tintwistle you are on the Woodhead Pass already. The road climbs beside Torside and Woodhead reservoirs, crosses into Yorkshire at Salter's Brook and drops to the Flouch roundabout. Take the A616 to the right, signed Sheffield and M1, past Langsett reservoir and along the Stocksbridge bypass to the Deepcar exit; come down Carr Road into the village and turn right onto Manchester Road, where the practice is number 334 with free parking outside. About 25 miles and 40 minutes in clear weather. There is nothing on the road between Tintwistle and the Flouch, so fill up in Glossop.
The Woodhead is closed by National Highways several times most winters, usually between Hollingworth and the Flouch, for snow or high winds, and it can shut at short notice. Check before you set off, and ring us; we can see the weather on our side. If both the Woodhead and the Snake are closed, the only way round is the M67, M60, M62 and M1 to junction 35A, which is nearer two hours and not a drive we would suggest for a toothache. On those days use the Greater Manchester urgent dental line through NHS 111, and for the hours in between our temporary fixes before your appointment page covers painkillers, a lost filling and a knocked-out tooth.
Glossop patients bring us the Peak District:
A knocked-out adult tooth is the one emergency where the drive itself matters, because the cells on the root surface survive about an hour outside the mouth. If you can, put the tooth back in its socket at the roadside, holding it by the crown and never scrubbing the root, and bite gently on a handkerchief; if you cannot, carry it in milk, not water, and phone us as you leave. Forty minutes is inside the window. A baby tooth is never put back. Once here, we reposition and splint the tooth, and the X-rays tell us whether the root has cracked as well.
The examination with X-rays is £30 and takes 15 minutes. Splinting a knocked-out tooth, smoothing and building up a chipped edge, or the first stage of a root canal is quoted in writing before we begin; there is an extra charge after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends. Prices are on emergency dental fees, and same-day emergency appointment describes the visit from the car park onwards.

It depends on the day. Over an open Woodhead we are about 40 minutes; Manchester or Stockport is similar in time with heavier traffic. The deciding factors are usually whether we can see you today and whether the pass is open.

Pick it up by the crown, rinse it briefly in milk if it is dirty, and put it back in the socket if you can. Otherwise keep it in milk and ring us on the way; the sooner it is back in, the better its chances.
Yes. Hadfield and Tintwistle are five minutes nearer than Glossop; Charlesworth and Gamesley about the same as the town centre.
