I called Friday evening to see if they had emergency appointments due to serious tooth pain. They were very polite and willing to accommodate. Due to me being a 45-minute drive away — the closest dentist I could find on Google that was open — they assured me they would see me when I got there. Upon arrival the staff were so polite and welcoming. The expertise and advice before the procedure was amazing. Definitely worth the trip to get the pain away. 100% recommend them.

Greystones and Lodge Moor: the same 25 minutes by two very different roads
These two neighbourhoods share a page because they share a drive time, not a road. Greystones sits above Ecclesall Road and reaches us through the city; Lodge Moor sits at the top of Redmires Road, on the edge of the moor, and reaches us down the Rivelin Valley or over the tops. Both are about 25 minutes away, 17.7 kilometres from Greystones Road and 24 from the Lodge Moor terminus. What they come for is the same: an emergency slot on the day, seven days a week, at a practice that opens at 8am, closes at 8pm and has a dentist rather than an answering service on the phone overnight. About eight in ten people who call in pain are treated at that visit, and you do not need to be registered.
The NHS picture from S11 and S10, stated neutrally
NHS 111, by phone or online, is the NHS route for urgent dental problems from either area; the triage runs 24 hours a day, though NHS South Yorkshire notes that urgent appointments themselves are not round the clock and may require travel. Charles Clifford Dental Hospital on Wellesley Road is closer to both Greystones and Lodge Moor than we are, and its free weekday urgent clinic, staffed by supervised students from 9 to 11am and 2 to 3pm, is worth knowing about. The Northern General on Herries Road is the adult A&E for swelling that threatens the eye or the airway, a suspected broken jaw or bleeding that will not stop; it does not carry out dental treatment. Our what counts as a dental emergency guide sets out the difference.
From Ecclesall Road: the city route via Penistone Road
From Greystones Road or Banner Cross, drop down to Ecclesall Road, the A625, and head into town to Hunter's Bar. Take Brocco Bank and Clarkehouse Road to Western Bank, join the A61 at Netherthorpe Road and follow it to Penistone Road, then turn onto Parkside Road and Catch Bar Lane, the A6102. Stay on it north through Hillsborough as Middlewood Road, Langsett Road South and Manchester Road into Deepcar; the practice is on the right with free parking in front. Route planners quote 25 minutes; allow 30 to 35 in the rush hour, and more on Sheffield Wednesday home match days when Penistone Road is slow. The 83 and 83a buses run along Ecclesall Road into the centre, from where the tram to Middlewood and the 57 bus complete the trip in a little over an hour.
From the Lodge Moor terminus: the moor road or the valley road
From the 51 bus terminus on Redmires Road, the road choice depends on the weather. The valley route is to go down to Manchester Road, the A57, cross onto Rivelin Valley Road and follow it to Malin Bridge, then Middlewood Road north through Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side to Deepcar. The moor route heads west on the A57 past Lodge Lane and turns right onto Mortimer Road, over the tops past Bolsterstone and down Carr Road into Deepcar; route planners prefer it at 22 minutes, but it is high, exposed and unlit, and on a foggy or icy night the valley road is the better bet. The 51 bus runs from the terminus into the city centre; from there the tram and the 57 finish the trip.
Headaches, holes and hopeless teeth: what these postcodes bring us
From these two postcodes the calls tend to be:
- A headache or pressure on one side of the face that has been blamed on sinuses and turns out to be an upper back tooth. See headache from dental infection.
- A hole where a filling used to be, sensitive to everything, that needs sealing today and a permanent filling later. See emergency temporary filling.
- A tooth that has broken to the gum and cannot be rebuilt, where the honest answer is to take it out at the same visit. See same-day tooth extraction.
The roots of the upper back teeth sit a few millimetres below the floor of the sinus, which is why an infected upper molar can feel like sinusitis, and why a bout of sinusitis can make every upper tooth ache at once.
Examination £30, everything else in writing
£30 for the examination including X-rays. A temporary filling, a permanent white filling at £150 to £220 or an extraction from £120 are quoted in writing before they start, with the additional out-of-hours charge after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends. See emergency dental fees for the full list and same-day emergency appointment for how the visit unfolds.

Questions, answered
Questions from Greystones & Lodge Moor patients
Is the moor road from Lodge Moor safe to use for an emergency at night?
On a clear, dry night, yes, and it is quick. In fog, ice or heavy rain, use Rivelin Valley Road and Middlewood Road instead; Mortimer Road is unlit, exposed and closes in snow.
How long does it take to drive from Greystones to Deepcar Dental Care?
About 25 minutes with clear roads via Ecclesall Road, the A61 and the A6102 through Hillsborough, and 30 to 35 in the rush hour. Parking is free at the practice.
Can I use the 51 bus from Lodge Moor to reach you?
For the first leg. The 51 takes you into the city centre; from there the Yellow route tram to Middlewood and the Stagecoach 57 to Manchester Road in Deepcar complete the trip in a little over an hour.
Is there an NHS emergency dentist nearer Greystones?
Charles Clifford Dental Hospital in the city centre runs a free weekday urgent clinic staffed by supervised students, and NHS 111 can look for other urgent NHS slots. We are private, open seven days, and see anyone without registration.
Could my one-sided headache really be a tooth?
Yes. An infected upper molar sits just below the sinus, and pain from it is often felt in the cheek, temple or eye rather than the tooth. An examination with an X-ray usually settles the question in minutes.
Do you see patients from Banner Cross, Ecclesall and Crosspool too?
Yes. Banner Cross and Ecclesall use the Greystones route through town; Crosspool joins the Rivelin Valley route from the A57.
In their own words
Patients who travelled to us in pain.
Dr Ibrahim helped me today with a difficult extraction. He is my hero for the dedication, skill and professionalism shown today. It was a tough one but wow. I was in so much pain and he saved me from it. I am eternally grateful to him. Just brilliant.
Visited today for a private emergency appointment. The practice was very clean and tidy, the staff very friendly and helpful. They really listened to my concerns and put me at ease. Addressed the problem and extracted my tooth — nothing was too much trouble. Swift service — top notch.
