People in Chesterfield are used to heading north: Meadowhall, the Northern General, the Hallamshire. Deepcar is the same direction, another 20 minutes on, and the M1 does most of the work. What brings S40 and S41 patients that far is being seen today rather than next week. Derbyshire's NHS urgent dental slots exist and have been expanded, but they fill quickly, and a private practice that cannot fit you in until Thursday is no help on a Sunday. Chesterfield is served by the Derby and Derbyshire NHS dental area, not South Yorkshire's, so NHS 111 will point you to Derbyshire practices holding urgent slots, several of them in Chesterfield itself. The triage runs day and night; the wait for an appointment depends on how your symptoms are scored. Chesterfield Royal Hospital at Calow has a 24-hour emergency department in a building that opened in 2023, and that is where a dental problem belongs once it has become a medical one: swelling tracking under the jaw or up into the cheek and eye, trouble swallowing, fever with a swollen face, a suspected broken jaw or bleeding that will not stop after 30 minutes of pressure. Toothache on its own, a tooth broken on a boiled sweet, a crown in your pocket: none of those can be fixed in an emergency department, and the staff there will say so.
The motorway route is simplest. Take the A617 from the Horns Bridge roundabout to the M1 at junction 29, head north for about 20 miles to junction 35A, and leave onto the A616 west for Stocksbridge. Come off at the Deepcar exit, down Carr Road, and turn right along Manchester Road to number 334, where there is free parking at the door. Planners quote 35 minutes on clear roads; allow 45. The alternative is the A61 straight through: the Dronfield bypass, Meadowhead, Chesterfield Road and London Road into the city, round the inner ring road to Penistone Road, past Hillsborough stadium and out along the A6102 through Oughtibridge to Deepcar. It is shorter in miles but slower at almost any time of day, and it is the one to use if the M1 has stopped.
Trains from Chesterfield to Sheffield are frequent, up to four an hour, and take 12 to 16 minutes. From Sheffield station the tram runs to Middlewood on the Yellow line, and the Stagecoach 57 bus continues up Manchester Road to Deepcar. Allow about 75 minutes all in; a taxi from Sheffield station is about 25 minutes if the timings do not line up.
Chesterfield's emergency calls skew a little older than Sheffield's, and the teeth reflect it:
A crowned tooth can decay or die underneath the crown without any hole you can see, because the crown hides it. The first sign is often a gum boil that comes and goes; that little sinus is pus finding the easiest way out. The fix depends on the root: an abscess on a tooth worth keeping is drained and root-treated, sometimes through the existing crown, while a tooth that has split is removed. Either way the pressure is released at the first visit, which is what stops the pain.
The examination with X-rays is £30 and takes about 15 minutes. Treatment is priced separately and put in writing before it begins, with an extra charge after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends, and Tabeo finance is available for larger amounts.
