Whirlow is on the far side of Sheffield from Deepcar, about half an hour by car. Emergency slots are held daily, 8am to 8pm, with a dentist on the phone overnight.

Whirlow has some of the most looked-after teeth in Sheffield, which is precisely why its emergencies are awkward: a chipped porcelain veneer or a crown that has come loose from a root-treated tooth is not something to hand to whoever happens to be free. Patients from S11 come to Deepcar Dental Care because emergency slots are held every day of the week, because the practice has a dental microscope, a CBCT scanner and an intraoral scanner on site, and because the same team can complete the crown, veneer or implant afterwards rather than passing you on. The distance is real, 20.6 kilometres and about half an hour with clear roads, and we would rather say so than pretend Whirlow is next door. Around eight in ten emergency callers are treated on the day they ring, and no registration is needed.
The NHS route from Whirlow is NHS 111, by phone or online, at any hour; NHS South Yorkshire notes that urgent appointments are not available round the clock and may mean travelling. Charles Clifford Dental Hospital on Wellesley Road is about 15 minutes from Whirlow and runs a free weekday urgent clinic staffed by supervised students, 9 to 11 in the morning and 2 to 3 in the afternoon. For an adult with swelling that is closing the eye, spreading down the neck or interfering with swallowing or breathing, the Northern General on Herries Road is the emergency department; for a child, Sheffield Children's Hospital on Western Bank. From Whirlow Brook Park, where Ecclesall Road South becomes Hathersage Road, head into town on Ecclesall Road South and Ecclesall Road, the A625, through Banner Cross to Hunter's Bar. Continue on Brocco Bank and Clarkehouse Road to Western Bank, join the A61 at Netherthorpe Road and follow it round to Penistone Road. Turn off onto Parkside Road and Catch Bar Lane, the A6102, and stay on it north through Hillsborough as Middlewood Road, Langsett Road South and Manchester Road into Deepcar. The practice is on the right with free parking in front. Route planners quote 29 minutes; allow 35 to 40 at busy times. The 81, 271 and 272 buses run along Ecclesall Road South, but public transport for the whole trip is over an hour with two changes, so driving is the sensible choice.
Whirlow's emergencies are mostly about well-made work meeting bad luck:
Porcelain is harder than enamel, so when a veneer chips the edge is often sharp enough to cut the lip. A little orthodontic wax or a piece of sugar-free chewing gum pressed over the edge protects it until you arrive.
The examination is £30 with X-rays and takes 15 minutes; a CBCT scan, if a cracked root or an implant needs a three-dimensional view, is £150. Treatment is priced in writing before it starts, with an out-of-hours charge after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends. Starting prices are on emergency dental fees and the visit is described on same-day emergency appointment. All-ceramic crowns are £750 to £1,000 and can be planned at the emergency visit, with 0% finance over 6 to 18 months through Tabeo, subject to status.
