Penistone is in Barnsley's borough but faces the other way. Barnsley town centre is half an hour off along the A628; we are 15 minutes down the valley, and for anyone in Thurlstone, Millhouse Green, Oxspring or Hoylandswaine we are the closest practice that opens seven days a week and holds emergency time on every one of them. Many Penistone families already have a dentist in the town and simply cannot be seen the same day, especially on Fridays and at weekends. That is the gap we fill. Ring 0114 288 2121, and if you are already in the car by the time you call, say so; we can often see you within the hour. About eight in ten emergency callers are treated on the day, and there is no registration and no need for anyone to refer you.
The NHS route from Penistone is NHS 111, which triages dental problems around the clock and, where an urgent appointment is justified, offers one somewhere within NHS South Yorkshire, which stretches from Penistone to Doncaster. Barnsley Hospital's emergency department on Gawber Road is the nearest A&E, about 20 minutes away, and it is the right place when a dental infection has become a medical emergency: swelling spreading into the neck or towards the eye, difficulty swallowing or breathing, a fever with a swollen face, a suspected broken jaw, or a socket still bleeding after 30 minutes of pressure. For a toothache, a lost filling or a chipped tooth, the hospital can offer painkillers and advice, and a dentist is where the problem actually gets fixed.
The direct way is the A629 Halifax Road south out of Penistone, through Thurgoland and down to the Wortley junction, where you join the A616 heading west towards Stocksbridge. Leave at the Deepcar exit, follow Carr Road down into the village and turn onto Manchester Road; we are at number 334 with free parking in front. The other way is the A628 west to the Flouch roundabout and the A616 back down past Langsett, which is a mile or two longer but useful if there is a problem at Wortley. Both take around 15 minutes. From Millhouse Green and Thurlstone, the Flouch route is the natural one.
The South Pennine Community Transport 23 links Millhouse Green, Penistone, Deepcar and Stocksbridge, stopping on Manchester Road close to us, but it runs about every two hours on weekdays and Saturdays with nothing on Sundays, so check the time before relying on it for an appointment. Penistone station is on the Penistone Line between Huddersfield and Sheffield, and Deepcar has no station, so the train is only useful as far as Sheffield and back out on the 57 bus; a taxi from Penistone is 15 minutes and usually the better choice.

Dry socket is the one people least expect. After a tooth comes out the socket fills with a clot, and healing builds on that clot; if it is lost, usually between day two and day five, the bone is left exposed and the pain is deep and constant. It is more likely after lower wisdom teeth, in smokers and in women taking the pill. The remedy is not antibiotics but a rinse of the socket and a soothing dressing, which usually brings relief within minutes, and we will do that for you whether or not we took the tooth out.

Treatment is quoted in writing on the spot; a temporary filling, an extraction or the first stage of a root canal can usually follow in the same visit. If it is an adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly in milk if dirty, push it back into the socket and bite gently on a cloth, then ring us on the way. If you cannot replant it, keep it in milk. Baby teeth are left out.
