Doncaster is the furthest of the South Yorkshire towns we see regularly, and the people who make the trip have usually tried closer options first. Some have a dentist in DN1 to DN12 who cannot fit them in until next month; some have not had a dentist since their old practice stopped taking NHS patients; a few simply want a Sunday appointment and have found nobody nearer offers one. Our Google reviews mention Doncaster more than any town outside Sheffield's own borders, and part of the reason is the M18: from Balby or Bessacarr you are on a motorway within ten minutes and off it at junction 35A without a single traffic light in between. Around eight in ten of the people who call us with an emergency are treated the same day. Phone 0114 288 2121, say where you are travelling from, and we will hold a slot that allows for the drive.
Doncaster sits inside the same NHS South Yorkshire dental area as Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley. Calling NHS 111 gets you a telephone triage at any hour, and if you meet the criteria an urgent appointment is offered within 24 hours or seven days depending on the symptoms, though the practice offering it could be anywhere across the four boroughs. Doncaster Royal Infirmary's emergency department on Armthorpe Road is open 24 hours and is the right destination when a dental infection has become a medical one: swelling spreading into the neck or up to close the eye, difficulty swallowing, a high temperature with a swollen face, a possible broken jaw, or bleeding from a socket that will not slow after 30 minutes of pressure. For pain, a broken tooth, a lost crown or a filling that has fallen out, the Infirmary cannot treat the tooth itself, and its staff will say so kindly and send you to a dentist.
From the town centre take the A6182 White Rose Way past Lakeside to junction 3 of the M18, then head south to junction 1, where the M18 runs into the M1 at junction 32. Stay northbound past Meadowhall to junction 35A and take the A616 west, signed Stocksbridge and Manchester. Leave the A616 at the Deepcar exit, follow Carr Road down into the village and turn onto Manchester Road; the practice is number 334, with free parking outside. Route planners show about 22 miles and under half an hour with clear roads; 40 to 45 minutes is realistic, more if the M1 is crawling at Tinsley. From Mexborough or Conisbrough, the A630 to the M1 at junction 34 saves ten minutes. From Thorne or Hatfield, add ten.
Trains from Doncaster to Sheffield run several times an hour and take between 22 and 31 minutes. At Sheffield, walk to the tram stop beside the station, ride the Yellow route to its Middlewood terminus and board the Stagecoach 57 for the 15-minute run up Manchester Road to Deepcar. Door to door is around an hour and a half, which is why most Doncaster patients drive or are driven.
The first appointment is a 15-minute emergency examination with the X-rays needed to see what is going on. Only with danger signs: spreading swelling, trouble swallowing or breathing, a high fever, a possible broken jaw or bleeding that will not stop. Plain toothache, however severe, needs a dentist rather than an emergency department.
