If you live in Oughtibridge, Deepcar Dental Care is the emergency dentist on your doorstep. The A6102 runs from Langsett Road South straight through Wharncliffe Side into Deepcar, and the practice is about five and a half kilometres from the village centre, six or seven minutes in normal traffic. When a tooth is pounding, a practice you can reach before the painkillers wear off is worth a great deal.
You do not need to be registered here. Ring 0114 288 2121, tell reception what is wrong, and you will be offered the earliest slot that day; we keep emergency appointments free every day of the week for exactly this. Eight in ten of the people who phone in pain are treated on the same day.
Oughtibridge is inside the Sheffield NHS area. For NHS urgent dental care you ring NHS 111 or use 111 online at any hour; they run a dental triage and will try to find you an urgent slot, but NHS South Yorkshire warns that these are not available around the clock and that you may be sent some distance to get one. Charles Clifford Dental Hospital on Wellesley Road runs a weekday urgent clinic staffed by supervised students between 9 and 11 in the morning and 2 and 3 in the afternoon. It is a 20-minute drive into town from the village.
For anything that threatens the airway, adult A&E is the Northern General on Herries Road, about 15 minutes from Oughtibridge along the A6102 ring road, and children go to Sheffield Children's Hospital on Western Bank. Swelling that closes an eye, crosses the midline of the face or makes swallowing difficult belongs there, not in a dental chair. A hot, throbbing tooth without swelling does not.
From Coronation Park and the village centre, head north on Langsett Road South, which is the A6102. Stay on it through Wharncliffe Side; it becomes Manchester Road as it enters Deepcar, and the practice is on the right on the Stubbin side of the village with a free car park in front. From Worrall, come down Worrall Road and Haggstones Road to join the A6102 in Oughtibridge, then follow the same road north. Wharncliffe Side residents are already on it and are three minutes away.
By bus, both halves of the Stagecoach Stocksbridge Flyer pass through Deepcar: the 57 travels via Wharncliffe Side, and the 57a comes up through Worrall and Oughtibridge before continuing to Deepcar and Stocksbridge. Between them there is a bus roughly every half hour on weekdays, and both stop on Manchester Road a short walk from us. Oughtibridge's own railway station closed decades ago, so bus or car are the practical choices.
The emergency examination takes about 15 minutes and includes the X-rays needed to find the cause. You then hear what is wrong, what can be done today, and what it will cost, in writing, before anything is started. Same-day treatment is the norm rather than the exception: a lost filling replaced, a crown recemented, an abscess drained, a tooth extracted or the first stage of a root canal completed. Milk keeps the cells on a knocked-out tooth's root alive for about an hour, which is why the carton in the fridge is more useful than a glass of water. Water actually damages those cells.

It is free, and a reasonable weekday choice if you can travel into town and wait. It does not run evenings or weekends, and treatment is by supervised students. We are six minutes away, open seven days, and you are seen by a qualified dentist, at a cost.
No. Household glues damage the tooth and the crown and make a proper refit harder. Keep the crown somewhere safe, avoid chewing on that side, and bring it with you; most can be cleaned and recemented the same day.
Do not put it back, because replanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth forming beneath it. Press a clean cloth on the gum to stop the bleeding and bring your child in so we can check for pieces left behind.
