I called Friday evening to see if they had emergency appointments due to serious tooth pain. They were very polite and willing to accommodate. Due to me being a 45-minute drive away — the closest dentist I could find on Google that was open — they assured me they would see me when I got there. Upon arrival the staff were so polite and welcoming. The expertise and advice before the procedure was amazing. Definitely worth the trip to get the pain away. 100% recommend them.

Hillsborough patients: why a practice up the valley is often quickest
Hillsborough has no shortage of dental practices, but few of them keep slots free for emergencies on a Sunday, and fewer still have a dentist answering the phone at three in the morning. That is the gap Deepcar Dental Care fills for S6. The practice is a 10.6-kilometre run up the A6102 from Hillsborough Corner, about 15 minutes outside the rush hour, and the 57 bus makes the same trip from the Middlewood tram terminus. Emergency appointments are held back every day of the week, including most bank holidays, and around eight in ten people who ring are treated on the day they call.
The NHS route from Hillsborough, and where A&E fits
If you would rather stay within the NHS, ring 111 or use 111 online. The dental triage is available 24 hours a day and they will search for an urgent NHS slot, though NHS South Yorkshire notes that the appointments themselves are not available around the clock and may involve travelling. Charles Clifford Dental Hospital on Wellesley Road, a tram ride and short walk from Hillsborough, sees urgent cases in a weekday clinic staffed by supervised students; the morning session runs 9 to 11 and the afternoon 2 to 3, and it is free.
Northern General Hospital on Herries Road is Hillsborough's nearest adult A&E, barely ten minutes away round the A6102 ring road, and it is the right destination for swelling that is closing an eye or spreading under the jaw, for difficulty swallowing or breathing, for a suspected broken jaw, or for bleeding that will not stop. What A&E will not do is fill or extract a tooth. Arrive with straightforward toothache and you should expect pain relief and advice to find a dentist.
Getting from Hillsborough Park to Deepcar by car, tram and bus
By car from Hillsborough Park or the stadium, join Leppings Lane and Catch Bar Lane, which together form the A6102, and follow it north as Middlewood Road, then Langsett Road South through Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side. It becomes Manchester Road on entering Deepcar and the practice is on the right with its own free car park. From Hillsborough Corner it is 10.6 kilometres and about 15 minutes; from Penistone Road add a few minutes at peak times.
Without a car, take the Yellow route tram to the Middlewood terminus (six minutes from Hillsborough), then the Stagecoach 57 towards Stocksbridge, which stops on Manchester Road in Deepcar. The 57 and 57a also run directly from Hillsborough, so if one is due you can skip the tram altogether. Allow 35 to 40 minutes door to door. Middlewood has a free park and ride if you would rather leave the car there and let the bus do the valley road.
Match days at Hillsborough stadium
Sheffield Wednesday home games change the picture for a couple of hours either side of kick-off. Roads immediately around the stadium are closed to traffic, Penistone Road and Leppings Lane back up, and the trams are full. If your appointment falls near kick-off on a home Saturday, leave earlier than you think you need to, or go up Middlewood Road from the Wadsley side rather than through Hillsborough Corner. Tell us when you book that you are coming from near the ground and we will try to place you outside the busiest window.
What we see most from S6: swelling, night pain and jaw ache
The most common calls from Hillsborough, in order:
- A face that has swollen overnight next to a bad tooth. Swelling is infection under pressure; the tooth or the abscess needs draining, and antibiotics on their own are not the fix. See swollen face.
- Toothache that wakes you at night or throbs without any trigger, which points to an inflamed nerve that will not recover by itself. See severe toothache.
- Aching in the jaw or ear on one side that turns out to be a tooth rather than the joint. See jaw pain.
A dental abscess that is drained today is usually visibly smaller by tomorrow morning, because the pressure that was causing the pain has been let out. That is why we would rather see a swollen face at 7pm than prescribe over the phone and look at it on Monday.
How the visit runs and what you pay
The emergency examination costs £30, includes X-rays and takes about 15 minutes. You leave with a diagnosis, a written price for any treatment and, in most cases, the treatment done on that visit. There is an additional out-of-hours charge after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends. The same-day emergency appointment page walks through the visit, and emergency dental fees lists the starting prices for each treatment.

Questions, answered
Questions from Hillsborough patients
Can I get to you by tram from Hillsborough?
Most of the way. The Yellow route tram runs to the Middlewood terminus in six minutes; from there the Stagecoach 57 bus continues up the valley and stops on Manchester Road in Deepcar, a short walk from the practice.
Is there an NHS emergency dentist in Hillsborough?
Not a dedicated one. NHS 111 will look for an urgent NHS slot, and Charles Clifford Dental Hospital in town runs a weekday student urgent clinic. We are a private practice and see anyone without registration.
How long does it take to drive from Hillsborough to Deepcar Dental Care?
About 15 minutes along the A6102 through Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side, longer at rush hour and on Sheffield Wednesday home match days.
Should I go to the Northern General for a swollen face?
Go to A&E if the swelling is closing your eye, spreading under your jaw or across your face, if swallowing or breathing is difficult, or if you have a fever and feel unwell. If it is a firm swelling next to one tooth and you can swallow normally, call us and we will see you today.
What will you actually do about an abscess on the day?
After X-rays we drain it, either through the tooth as the first stage of a root canal or with a small incision in the gum, and then talk through whether the tooth can be saved. Antibiotics are added only if the infection is spreading. See incision and drainage.

Patients who travelled to us in pain.
Dr Ibrahim helped me today with a difficult extraction. He is my hero for the dedication, skill and professionalism shown today. It was a tough one but wow. I was in so much pain and he saved me from it. I am eternally grateful to him. Just brilliant.
Visited today for a private emergency appointment. The practice was very clean and tidy, the staff very friendly and helpful. They really listened to my concerns and put me at ease. Addressed the problem and extracted my tooth — nothing was too much trouble. Swift service — top notch.
