Driving to Deepcar from across Sheffield

Deepcar is inside the Sheffield boundary, on the A6102 Manchester Road between Oughtibridge and Stocksbridge, postcode S36 2RH, about eight miles from the Town Hall. From most of the city the drive is 15 to 35 minutes, and it runs against the commute, so the last few miles up the valley are usually clear even when Penistone Road is not.

City centre

north on the A61 Penistone Road past Wadsley Bridge; where the A61 swings right for the M1, keep straight onto the A6102 through Middlewood, Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side. One road from the ring road to the front door. About 25 minutes.

Hillsborough and Wadsley

you are already on the A6102. From Hillsborough Corner follow Middlewood Road north past the tram terminus. About 15 minutes, 12 from Wadsley.

Crookes and Walkley

down School Road or South Road to Hillsborough Corner, then the A6102. Around 20 minutes; the steep descent is the slow part, not the main road.

Stannington and Loxley

down to Malin Bridge, right onto Middlewood Road, north. About 15 minutes.

Ecclesall, Nether Edge and Greystones

Ecclesall Road into town and out on the A61, or Brocco Bank and the Rivelin Valley Road (A6101) to Malin Bridge. 25 to 30 minutes either way, the Rivelin route being the calmer. Fulwood and Ranmoor take the same valley road in about 25.

Woodseats and Norton

A61 Chesterfield Road through Heeley, through the centre, out on Penistone Road — the same A-road the whole way, which helps if you are in pain. 30 to 35 minutes. Dore and Whirlow join it via Abbeydale Road in about 30.

Meadowhall and Darnall

Herries Road is also the A6102, so follow it past the Northern General to Hillsborough and turn north. On a busy shopping day take the M1 to junction 35A and the A616 bypass down into Deepcar. 20 to 30 minutes.

Chapeltown, Ecclesfield and High Green

over Cowley Hill and down through Grenoside to Oughtibridge, or out to junction 35A. 15 to 20 minutes.

Sat nav to S36 2RH brings you to the door, and if you are running late the slot is held rather than given away. We have separate directions for Hillsborough, Wadsley, Fulwood, Dore, Whirlow, Ranmoor and Bents Green, Greystones and Lodge Moor, Oughtibridge, Stocksbridge, Barnsley and Rotherham; see also areas we cover.

Matchday traffic on Penistone Road

Sheffield Wednesday’s ground sits on Penistone Road at the Leppings Lane junction, exactly where the city route to Deepcar passes. For an hour either side of a home kick-off, Penistone Road, Leppings Lane and Middlewood Road crawl and the tram is packed. On a home Saturday leave before 1.30pm for a 3pm start, or come round on the Parkway and M1 to junction 35A. A midweek evening kick-off does the same to the 6pm to 8pm slots, and a Sheffield United home game does it to Chesterfield Road. Ring if you are stuck; we would rather shuffle the diary than have you turn round.

Supertram, bus and taxi options

Deepcar has no railway station. The Supertram Yellow route runs from Meadowhall through the city centre and Hillsborough to Middlewood, its northern end, and from there the Stagecoach 57 and 57a to Stocksbridge stop on Manchester Road close to the practice, about 15 minutes on. The 57 also starts at Sheffield Interchange and runs out through Hillsborough, so you can stay on one bus from town; allow around 50 minutes. Services thin out in the evening and on Sundays, so check the next one before you set off. By train, Chapeltown is the nearest station and a short taxi across.

A taxi from Middlewood tram stop is a short run up the valley, and about 25 minutes from town. In real pain a taxi is often the calmest option: you are not fit to drive, and you do not want to be counting bus stops with an abscess. After conscious sedation you must not drive at all, and an adult needs to take you home.

Parking at the door instead of hunting for a space in town

Parking is free and directly outside on Manchester Road, with more on the side streets. No car park to find, no ticket machine, no time limit to watch while you are in the chair — which matters when the appointment overruns because the dentist has decided to take the nerve out today rather than send you home in pain. The surgeries are on the ground floor, so a pushchair or a wheelchair comes straight in.

In the centre you pay by the hour in a multi-storey or feed a machine on the street, and around the dental hospital on Wellesley Road most of the kerb is permit-only. Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone covers the inner ring road as well; it charges non-compliant vans, taxis and lorries rather than private cars, but it is one more thing to think about. Deepcar sits well outside it.

What counts as an emergency, and what happens when you arrive

We treat the same problems from Sheffield as from anywhere else. Any of these earns a same-day slot rather than a wait for a routine appointment:

Unsure whether your problem belongs on that list? Ring anyway, and we will tell you honestly whether it can wait until tomorrow. Our guide to what counts as a dental emergency covers the borderline cases.

  1. 01

The examination, and treating you on the same visit

The emergency examination takes about 15 minutes and costs £30 including any X-rays. The dentist asks which tooth, how long, what sets it off; then taps the suspect teeth to find the tender one, tests with cold to see how long the pain lingers, and bites you gently on a plastic stick if a crack is likely, because a cracked tooth usually hurts on release rather than on pressure. A digital X-ray is taken where it will change the decision. You then get the options, each with a price, in writing, before anything is done.

Most patients are treated in the same visit: a temporary filling, draining an abscess, the first stage of a root canal, or an extraction. Around eight in ten emergency patients are treated on the day they call. It helps to know what the dentist is working in — the nerve canal at the tip of a root is roughly the width of a human hair, which is why that part is slow and often done under magnification. See our guide to emergency dental treatments.

Antibiotics need saying plainly, because patients often arrive expecting them. They do not cure toothache: the problem sits inside a tooth whose blood supply has died, so nothing is carried there. They are prescribed only when an infection is spreading or you are unwell with it, and the cause still has to be drained or removed. See antibiotics for dental infection.

  2. 02

What can be finished today, and what needs a second visit

Pain relief is almost always same-day: taking the nerve out, draining pus, smoothing a sharp edge, dressing a dry socket, easing a filling the bite is hitting first. A complete root canal usually needs a longer second appointment, and the crown that protects the tooth afterwards needs a scan and a laboratory. A buried root or an awkward wisdom tooth is better booked as a planned surgical visit. Either way you leave comfortable and with a date.

  3. 03

When it is more than a dental problem

A swelling that is closing an eye, crossing under the chin, or making it hard to swallow or breathe needs hospital, not us, and so does a suspected broken jaw. Infection spreading into the floor of the mouth can push the tongue up and narrow the airway, which is why trouble swallowing is urgent rather than just bad toothache. In Sheffield that means the Northern General on Herries Road, S5 7AU, which has the maxillofacial unit, about 20 minutes from us. If breathing is affected, call 999; out of hours, NHS 111 advises. Our emergency dental care guide sets out how to decide.

NHS urgent dental care in Sheffield: what is available and how long it takes

We are a private practice, and it is fair to set out what the NHS offers so you can choose. Charles Clifford Dental Hospital on Wellesley Road, part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, runs an acute dental service, but a limited one: a set number of patients, generally on weekday mornings, with the most severe problems first — facial swelling, trauma, bleeding that will not stop. Toothache on its own is often redirected to community services.

Outside hospital hours, NHS 111 is the route. A call handler works through a set of questions, a dental professional may ring back, and if you meet the criteria you are offered an urgent slot at a contracted practice, which may be some distance away and may be the next day or later. If you already have an NHS dentist, their reception should offer an urgent appointment under their contract, depending on the capacity they have that week.

None of that is a criticism of the people running those services; demand outstrips what they are funded to do, and they treat the sickest patients first for good reason. It is simply why people in pain ring us. We can say ‘yes, today’ and mean it, and we are open until 8pm every day, including Sundays and most bank holidays. An NHS urgent appointment carries a fixed Band 1 charge, free if you are under 18, pregnant, in the year after having a baby, or on certain benefits. Ours costs more; what you are paying for is being seen and treated today.

What an emergency visit costs, agreed in writing before treatment

The £30 covers the examination and X-rays only. Treatment is priced separately and you see the figure on paper before you agree to it, so nothing is added while you are lying back with your mouth open. An out-of-hours charge applies after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends, and reception states it when you book. Typical fees:

Smaller procedures are quoted once the dentist has seen the tooth: an emergency temporary filling, a pulpectomy, incision and drainage, irrigation and a medicated dressing, recementing a crown, a temporary crown, splinting a loose tooth, putting a knocked-out tooth back, dry socket dressing, adjusting a bite, or surgical removal of a broken root.

Pay by debit or credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or cash. For larger work, 0% finance over 6 to 18 months is available through Tabeo, with terms up to 60 months at 10.9% APR representative, subject to status. Full figures are in our emergency dental fees guide and on the fees page; the finance page explains the application.

Booking a slot today, the 24-hour line and what to do while you travel

  1. Call 0114 288 2121, or message +44 7438 552 581 on WhatsApp if talking is difficult. Reception asks where the pain is, how long it has been there, whether there is swelling or a temperature, and what medicines you take.
  2. Severe pain, swelling and injuries go to the earliest slot. Emergency slots are held back every day rather than filled with routine work, which is how we can offer a time instead of a waiting list.
  3. You are given a time and the £30 fee is confirmed, with the out-of-hours charge if one applies.
  4. Come to 334 Manchester Road, Deepcar, S36 2RH. Bring photo identification, a list of your medicines, anything in your medical history that matters (heart conditions, blood thinners, allergies, pregnancy), the broken piece or crown, and a way to pay.

In opening hours you can also book online through the link at the top of this page. Outside 8am to 8pm, phone is the only route, and the line is answered personally by Dr Ijaz overnight, not by a call centre. We are not a 24-hour walk-in clinic: if your problem cannot safely wait until 8am he will arrange to see you, and if it can, he will tell you what to do until then. More in our same-day appointment guide and weekend and out-of-hours page.

Opening hours

The 6pm to 8pm slots need no time off work, so Sheffield patients take them first; ask early in the day if that is what you need.

While you are on your way

  • Pain: paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the packet, taken before the pain peaks rather than after. Never hold an aspirin against the gum; it burns the tissue and does nothing for the tooth.
  • Swelling: something cold wrapped in a cloth against the cheek, and sleep propped up overnight. Heat draws an infection outwards, so keep it off.
  • Knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root; rinse for a second in milk if dirty; push it back into the socket if you can, otherwise carry it in milk or inside the cheek, never in water. Milk keeps the cells on the root alive for about an hour, which is why the 60-minute target matters. Baby teeth are never put back.
  • Lost filling or crown: keep the crown, chew on the other side, and temporary dental cement from a chemist will seal the gap.
  • Bleeding after an extraction: bite on damp gauze for 20 to 30 minutes without checking, no rinsing for 24 hours, no smoking. If it has not stopped after two goes, ring.
  • Sharp or cracked tooth: keep off that side, and cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum if it is cutting your tongue. More in our temporary fixes guide.

Who will treat you, and help if you are nervous

Emergency care is led by Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, principal dentist and practice owner (GDC 301711; BDS, BSc (Hons), MSc from Leeds, with postgraduate qualifications in implant and restorative dentistry). He has placed more than 200 implants since 2022 and answers the overnight line himself. If a tooth can be saved rather than taken out, Nik, our associate with a postgraduate certificate in endodontics, does root canal work under a dental microscope, which finds the fine canals a naked eye misses. Dr George, who qualified in Sheffield in 2020, is the dentist we book for people who are frightened. Laura Albinson, our senior nurse, has been here 28 years. All of them are on the team page.

The equipment saves you a second trip: digital X-rays on the screen beside you in seconds, a CBCT scanner for a 3D view when a root or a swelling is not behaving as the flat picture suggests, an intraoral scanner instead of impression material, and the microscope. Nothing is sent across the city to be looked at.

If you are nervous, say so when you ring; it changes how we book you, not whether we will see you. Nothing is done without an explanation first, you can raise a hand to stop at any point, and there is no lecture about how long it has been. Numbing is given slowly and we wait for it to work. For longer treatment, conscious sedation costs £200 a session. Mention any access needs when you book.

What Sheffield patients say once they have been

We hold a 5.0 rating on Google from more than 400 reviews, and a good share come from people who travelled in from Sheffield with an emergency. The same themes repeat: being seen within hours of ringing, including on Sundays and in the evening — one patient describes phoning about an abscess on a Sunday evening and having it drained that night. The price quoted on the phone being the price paid, with nobody selling them anything extra. Dentists explaining what they had found before touching anything. Nervous patients saying they were not rushed or judged. One parent describes a front tooth lost at football on a Saturday night: rang the line at 10pm, seen at 8am, tooth kept.

They are Google reviews, so we cannot edit them, and we would rather you read a hundred of them than take our word for it. They are on our reviews page, and hours, prices and who will treat you are on the main emergency dentist page.

I called Friday evening to see if they had emergency appointments due to serious tooth pain. They were very polite and willing to accommodate. Due to me being a 45-minute drive away — the closest dentist I could find on Google that was open — they assured me they would see me when I got there. Upon arrival the staff were so polite and welcoming. The expertise and advice before the procedure was amazing. Definitely worth the trip to get the pain away. 100% recommend them.

Visited today for a private emergency appointment. The practice was very clean and tidy, the staff very friendly and helpful. They really listened to my concerns and put me at ease. Addressed the problem and extracted my tooth — nothing was too much trouble. Swift service — top notch.

Questions, answered

Common questions

How far is Deepcar Dental Care from Sheffield city centre?

About eight miles and 25 minutes by car, up the A61 Penistone Road to Hillsborough and then the A6102 through Oughtibridge. By public transport, the Supertram Yellow route to Middlewood, then the 57 bus or a taxi along Manchester Road.

Is Deepcar in Sheffield?

Yes. Deepcar is a village within the City of Sheffield, in the S36 postcode, between Oughtibridge and Stocksbridge on the A6102.

Can I see an emergency dentist in Sheffield today?

Almost always. We hold emergency slots every day from 8am to 8pm, and around eight in ten emergency patients are treated on the day they call. Ring 0114 288 2121 and reception will give you a time.

Can I see an emergency dentist in Sheffield on a Sunday?

Yes. We are open 8am to 8pm on Sundays, as on every other day, including most bank holidays. An out-of-hours charge applies at weekends and reception tells you the figure when you book.

Is there a 24-hour emergency dentist in Sheffield?

Our phone line is answered 24 hours a day, by Dr Ijaz personally overnight, but the practice itself is open 8am to 8pm. If a problem cannot wait until morning he will arrange to see you; if breathing or swallowing is affected, that is a 999 call, not a dentist.

Is there an NHS emergency dentist in Sheffield?

Charles Clifford Dental Hospital runs a limited acute service for the most severe cases, and NHS 111 can arrange an urgent slot if you meet their criteria. Neither is certain to be same-day or nearby. We are a private practice and do not offer NHS appointments.

Is there a walk-in emergency dentist in Sheffield?

We do not run a walk-in queue. You phone, you are given a time, and you are seen at that time, so nobody sits in a waiting room with a toothache for hours.

Do I need to be registered, and do you take patients from the whole of Sheffield?

No registration is needed and you do not have to become a regular patient afterwards. We see emergency patients from every part of the city and well beyond it.

Can I get to Deepcar without a car?

Yes. There is no railway station, but the Supertram Yellow route to Middlewood connects with the 57 and 57a buses along Manchester Road, and the 57 also runs from the city centre via Hillsborough. A taxi from town takes about 25 minutes.

What does the £30 emergency examination include?

About 15 minutes with a dentist, the tests needed to find which tooth is causing the trouble, any X-rays taken on the day, and a plain explanation of the options with a price for each in writing. Treatment is charged separately.

What payment methods do you accept, and can I spread the cost?

Debit and credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and cash, paid at the appointment. For larger treatment, 0% finance over 6 to 18 months is available through Tabeo, with terms up to 60 months at 10.9% APR representative, subject to status.

Can a dental abscess be drained on the same day?

Usually, yes. The dentist opens the tooth or the gum to let the pus out, which is what relieves the pressure; antibiotics are added only if the infection is spreading or you are unwell with it. The tooth then needs a root canal or an extraction to stop it returning.

Do you see children with dental emergencies?

Yes, children are seen the same day alongside adults. Bring the tooth if one has been knocked out, but a baby tooth is never put back in; an adult tooth is, and the sooner the better.

Who will I see for an emergency appointment?

One of our own dentists, Dr Ijaz, Nik or Dr George, depending on the day and the problem, with a qualified nurse alongside. You are not passed between clinicians mid-appointment.

I am terrified of the dentist. Will that be a problem?

No. Tell reception when you ring and we will book you with the dentist best suited to nervous patients, explain each step before it happens, and stop whenever you raise a hand. Conscious sedation can be arranged for longer treatment.

Is the practice accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs?

Yes. The entrance is at street level and the reception, waiting area and surgeries are all on the ground floor, with free parking directly outside. Mention any particular needs when you book.
