Wadsley, Wadsley Bridge and the newer streets of Wadsley Park Village are close enough to Deepcar that a same-day emergency here is a genuinely short trip: 9.7 kilometres from Worrall Road, about 12 minutes by car outside the rush hour. We keep appointments free every day for people in pain, we are open seven days a week including most bank holidays, and you do not need to be a registered patient. Call 0114 288 2121 and reception will find you the first slot that day. Around eight in ten people who ring us in pain are treated during that same visit.
The Middlewood tram terminus and park and ride sit at the foot of Wadsley, which is why a fair number of our Wadsley patients arrive on the 57 bus rather than driving.
For NHS urgent dental care from Wadsley the route is NHS 111, by phone or online, at any hour. The triage is round the clock; the appointments are not, and NHS South Yorkshire says you may have to travel to reach one. Charles Clifford Dental Hospital in the city centre offers a weekday urgent clinic staffed by supervised students, mornings and early afternoons only, which is worth considering on a weekday if money is tight and you can get into town.
Adult A&E for Wadsley is the Northern General on Herries Road, roughly ten minutes away, and it is the right place for swelling that is spreading towards the eye or throat, difficulty swallowing, a suspected broken jaw or bleeding that will not stop with pressure. Hospital emergency departments do not treat teeth, so an ordinary toothache will usually be sent back to a dentist with painkillers. From Worrall Road or Wadsley Lane, drop down to Middlewood Road, the A6102, and head north away from the city. Stay with it as it becomes Langsett Road South through Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side, then Manchester Road in Deepcar. The practice is on the right on the Stubbin side of Deepcar with a free car park directly in front. From Wadsley Park Village, Middlewood Drive brings you out onto Middlewood Road just below the tram terminus. From Wadsley Bridge, Penistone Road to Leppings Lane and then the A6102 is the simplest line.
By public transport, walk or take the 61 or 62 down to Hillsborough or to the tram terminus at Middlewood, then the Stagecoach 57 towards Stocksbridge. It stops on Manchester Road a short walk from the practice. Allow about half an hour on the bus; in the evening the 57 drops to hourly.
Wadsley has a settled, older population and a lot of teeth that were restored decades ago. The emergencies reflect that:
A crown that comes off with the tooth still inside it is a very different problem from one that leaves a broken stump behind. The first is usually a ten-minute recement; the second may need a post and a new crown, or an extraction, and only an X-ray tells you which.
Because so many Wadsley patients are in their seventies and eighties, the layout of the building matters. Our surgeries are on the ground floor with level access from the car park, so there are no stairs between the car and the chair. If you are bringing a parent who is anxious, or who takes blood thinners, say so when you book: we will want to see the medication list, and Dr George is particularly good with nervous patients. The emergency examination is £30 and includes X-rays. Yes, in the sense that it needs an examination within a day or two. If it was knocked loose it may need splinting; if it has loosened on its own it is usually gum disease, and the sooner it is looked at the better the chance of keeping it.
