Huddersfield patients cross a county boundary to reach us, and the reason is usually timing rather than geography. The A616 runs almost door to door: it leaves the town at Lockwood, threads through the Holme Valley villages, comes over the moor at the Flouch and drops into Stocksbridge, and we are the first practice after the bypass ends. Kirklees has good dentists, but a toothache on a Friday evening or a broken tooth on a Sunday morning meets the same problem everywhere: the practice is shut until Monday. We are open until 8pm seven days a week, the overnight line is answered by Dr Ijaz himself rather than a call centre, and around eight in ten of the people who ring with an emergency are treated on the day. No registration is needed and there is no referral to arrange; you call 0114 288 2121, we find a slot that allows for the drive over, and you come.
For NHS urgent dental care in Huddersfield, ring NHS 111 or use 111 online. West Yorkshire's dental triage runs 24 hours a day and, if your symptoms qualify, an appointment is offered at whichever practice in the region has capacity, which may not be in Kirklees. Huddersfield Royal Infirmary on Acre Street in Lindley has a new emergency department that opened in 2024, and it is where to go if a dental infection has become dangerous: swelling moving down the neck or up towards the eye, a struggle to swallow or breathe, a high temperature alongside a swollen face, a suspected jaw fracture, or bleeding that continues after half an hour of firm pressure. A&E staff can give antibiotics and pain relief in those situations, but they do not extract teeth or place fillings, so toothache on its own is better spent on a dentist.
Leave the ring road on the A616 Lockwood Road, signed Sheffield, and follow it through Lockwood and Honley, keeping left at the lights in Honley for Sheffield rather than Holmfirth. Continue through Brockholes to the New Mill crossroads, where the A616 turns right and immediately sharp left, then on through Jackson Bridge and past the Hepworth turn to climb over the moor to the Flouch roundabout. Go straight over, drop past Langsett reservoir, and stay on the A616 as it becomes the Stocksbridge bypass. Take the Deepcar exit, come down Carr Road into the village and turn right onto Manchester Road; the practice is number 334, with its own free car park. It is about 20 miles and 40 minutes; the stretch above Hepworth is exposed and can be slow in snow, so check the forecast in winter.
Without a car, the Penistone Line is the honest answer. Northern trains leave Huddersfield hourly and reach Penistone in about half an hour; from Penistone the South Pennine Community Transport 23 continues through Deepcar to Stocksbridge, but only every two hours on weekdays and Saturdays, so a taxi from Penistone station, about 15 minutes, is often the better link. Allow an hour and a quarter overall.

Pericoronitis is worth a word because people expect antibiotics for it and are surprised when we reach for a syringe of saline instead. The gum flap over a half-erupted wisdom tooth traps food and bacteria; cleaning underneath it, sometimes smoothing or removing the upper tooth that bites down on it, settles most cases within a day or two. Antibiotics are added only when the infection is spreading or you feel unwell with it. If the tooth flares repeatedly, removal is the lasting fix, and we can usually do that under local anaesthetic or with sedation at a planned visit.

In time, yes. The A616 is a direct road with few junctions, so 20 miles takes about 40 minutes outside rush hour. Compare that with crossing Huddersfield itself at 5pm.
It is rarely shut, but when the tops are bad the alternative is the M62 and M1 to junction 35A, which adds about 25 minutes. Ring us before setting off and we will tell you what the road is like at our end.

Sometimes. If the X-ray shows straightforward roots and the infection is not too swollen to numb well, yes; otherwise we settle the infection first and book the removal for a few days later.
