Root canal treatment
When the nerve inside a tooth becomes inflamed or infected, the result is often severe, throbbing pain. Root canal treatment removes the infected tissue, cleans and shapes the canals and seals them, so the tooth can be kept and restored.
Our associate dentist Nik has a postgraduate certificate in endodontics and works under a dental microscope, which makes complex anatomy, curved canals and retreatments far more predictable. We also accept referrals from other practices for exactly this work.
Who it’s for
The people who get the most from root canal treatment, in our experience. If you are unsure, the first appointment settles it with a written plan.
The journey
Examination, testing and X-rays confirm which tooth is responsible and whether it can be saved.
Under local anaesthetic the infected pulp is removed, which usually brings immediate relief. In emergencies this first stage is done the same day.
Canals are shaped, disinfected and sealed under magnification, then the tooth is restored, often with a crown to protect it.

Modern root canal treatment is done under local anaesthetic and feels much like having a filling. It relieves pain rather than causing it.
Usually one or two, depending on the tooth and the level of infection.
Keeping your own tooth is almost always preferable where the prognosis is good. We will give you an honest assessment and the cost of both options.
