Stocksbridge has a town centre, a leisure centre and Fox Valley, but when a molar splits on a Saturday afternoon the only question that matters is who can see you today. Deepcar Dental Care is the nearest practice to the town that keeps emergency slots back every day, and you do not have to be a registered patient to use them. Phone 0114 288 2121, describe the problem, and reception will offer the first slot that fits. Roughly eight in ten people who ring us in pain are treated on that same day.
Most Stocksbridge patients already know the building: it is the practice on the left as Manchester Road runs out of the town into Deepcar, with its own free car park at the front. Laura Albinson, our senior nurse, has worked here for 28 years and has met a good proportion of the town at one time or another.
There is no NHS urgent dental clinic in Stocksbridge. If you want NHS care for an urgent problem, the route is NHS 111, whose dental triage runs 24 hours a day. They will look for an urgent slot somewhere in South Yorkshire, and NHS South Yorkshire says plainly that urgent appointments are not available round the clock and that you may need to travel to reach one.
The nearest hospital emergency department for adults is the Northern General on Herries Road, around 25 to 30 minutes away via the A6102, and that is where to go if your face is swelling towards the eye, if you cannot swallow your own saliva, or if a wound will not stop bleeding. Emergency departments do not carry out dental treatment, so for a plain toothache you will usually be given pain relief and told to see a dentist. Leave Fox Valley by Fox Valley Way onto Manchester Road and turn towards Deepcar; the practice is about a kilometre along on the left, which at town speeds is well under five minutes. If you are already on the A616 bypass heading for Sheffield, do not stay on it: leave at the Stocksbridge or Deepcar junction and use Manchester Road, because the practice is in the village, not up on the bypass.
The Stagecoach 57 and 57a, the Stocksbridge Flyer, run along Manchester Road from the town centre through Deepcar towards Hillsborough and stop close to the practice; between them there is a bus roughly every half hour on weekdays and about hourly in the evenings and at weekends. The South Pennine Community Transport 35 Stocksbridge to Deepcar circular also passes through the village on weekdays. Parking is free and directly outside, and the surgeries are on the ground floor, so there are no steps between the car and the chair.
Stocksbridge is still a shift town. If you come off nights at the steelworks or finish a day shift on one of the industrial estates along the valley, a practice that opens at 8am and does not close until 8pm, seven days a week, means you can be seen without giving up a shift. An out-of-hours charge applies after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends, and we tell you the amount before you book. Overnight, the emergency line is answered by Dr Ibraheem Ijaz himself, and he will hold you a slot for the morning.
Three problems come up again and again from the S36 side of the valley:
A dry socket almost never starts on day one. It appears on day two to five, when the blood clot that should be protecting the bone is lost, and it is more common in smokers, in women on the pill and after lower wisdom teeth.

Yes. We are open 8am to 8pm on Sundays and hold emergency slots on Sundays as on every other day. A weekend charge applies on top of the £30 examination and we will tell you the figure when you book.
Whenever the pain starts. Between 8am and 8pm reception books you in; outside those hours Dr Ijaz answers the emergency line personally and can hold the first slot of the morning so you can come straight from your shift.
For being seen in person, usually yes. NHS 111 triage is available at any hour, but the urgent appointment it finds may be some distance away and not on the same day. We are five minutes from the town and treat most emergency callers on the day.
