What is general dentistry?
General dentistry is the routine dental care a practice provides: examinations, prevention, fillings, extractions and urgent treatment for people of all ages. It is often called family dentistry, because one practice can look after a whole household, from a child's first visit to an adult's long-term care. A general dental practitioner is a dentist who provides this broad care and plans more involved treatment when it is needed.
Preventive dentistry sits at the centre of general dentistry. NHS guidance notes that tooth decay may not cause any symptoms at first, which is one reason regular examinations matter. Treatment depends on how deep decay has reached into the tooth's layers of enamel, dentine and pulp: early decay can sometimes be reversed with fluoride, a cavity usually needs a filling, and decay that reaches the pulp may need root canal treatment.
What happens at a dental examination?
In NHS guidance, a dental examination checks teeth, gums and mouth, reviews general health and ends with advice and a date for the next visit. It is the starting point of general dentistry. At Deepcar Dental Care, a routine check-up takes 30 minutes.
Your gums are screened with a Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE) at every examination. The British Society of Periodontology describes the BPE as a quick screening measurement of the gum around each group of teeth, and a higher score prompts more detailed charting. Gum disease is very common and its early signs include gums that bleed when you brush, which is why NHS guidance is to keep having check-ups even when nothing feels wrong.
Which services does general dentistry include?

At Deepcar Dental Care, long-term general dentistry combines prevention with 12-month aftercare cover on fillings, crowns and bridges, dentures and porcelain veneers. When treatment is needed, rubber dam is used routinely to keep the tooth isolated and dry, a caries detection dye is used to identify decay, and no overseas laboratory work is used. The 12-month aftercare cover gives free repair, free replacement or remake, and free adjustments. The cover does not apply where damage comes from accidental trauma or infection, and for dentures gum recession is also excluded. When is the practice open, and how quickly can you be seen?
Deepcar Dental Care is open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week. Routine general dentistry appointments are booked online through the booking portal or by phone on 0114 288 2121, and the fee is the same whichever day or time your appointment is.
A new patient's first appointment is usually available within a few days, and our page for new patients has more on that first visit. For urgent problems, the practice also has a 24-hour emergency phone line, and urgent dental care has its own page. Between check-ups, NHS guidance is to book a separate appointment rather than wait if a problem appears.

Who is the practice's principal dentist?
Deepcar Dental Care's principal dentist is Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, GDC 301711, a General Dental Practitioner registered with the General Dental Council. He holds a BDS, a BSc (Hons), an MSc from Leeds and a PG Cert in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry. He is one of the dentists at the practice who look after nervous patients.
How do you become a new patient?
If you are registering with a new dentist, a new patient appointment at Deepcar Dental Care is 30 minutes, booked online or by phone. Before the visit you can complete your medical history online, and on the day you bring a list of any medicines you take. A membership plan is also available, covering 2 examinations and 2 hygiene visits a year.
Children are welcome from any age, and we usually suggest a first visit by 3. NHS advice is to start when the first milk teeth appear, so an earlier visit is welcome too. A child's first visit is just a look and a chat, with no treatment.
If you feel anxious about dental treatment, your first visit is a chat to get to know you, and treatment never starts on that first visit.
How much does general dentistry cost?
General dentistry fees depend on the treatment you need. On the current Deepcar Dental Care fee list, a new patient examination is £39 on the current offer (usually £85, and £39 is also the fee for a child's new patient examination), a routine examination is from £63 and an emergency examination from £30. Hygiene appointments start from £75, white fillings are £150 to £220, a tooth extraction is £120 to £260 and a wisdom tooth extraction £350 to £450. Each figure on the list is a starting price.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I have a dental check-up?
How often depends on your own oral health, and your dentist sets the interval. NHS guidance says the gap between check-ups can range from 3 months to 2 years, or up to 1 year for under-18s, with the next date agreed at each check-up. At Deepcar Dental Care, the standard recall for a healthy adult is 6 months.
Can I book a hygiene appointment without seeing a dentist first?
Yes. You can book directly with our dental therapist, without registering as a patient, and online through the booking portal. A hygiene appointment lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. With healthy gums, the usual recall is every 6 months; after treated gum disease it is every 3 to 6 months.
Can I have dental treatment under sedation?
Yes, for adults whose suitability is confirmed first at a separate pre-assessment appointment. Sedation is arranged on request and provided in house by Dr Ibraheem Ijaz and another sedation-trained dentist in our team. You need an escort for the whole day and must not drive for 24 hours. Will a filling hurt?
A filling should not hurt once the area is numb. Where needed, a local anaesthetic injection numbs the area being treated, and you stay awake. At Deepcar Dental Care, topical numbing gel is applied before every injection. Numbness usually wears off over a few hours; until then, avoid hot drinks and take care not to bite your cheek.
When should I see a dentist about a mouth ulcer?
See a dentist or GP about a mouth ulcer that lasts more than 3 weeks. NHS guidance gives the same advice for a red or white patch, a lump, or mouth pain that does not go away. These signs often have other causes. Where oral cancer is suspected, the practice makes the urgent two-week referral itself.
How long does a white filling last?
A white filling typically lasts 5 to 10 years, although this depends on the individual patient, their oral hygiene and their habits. At Deepcar Dental Care a white filling appointment takes around 60 minutes. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard, which is charged separately.
