What do general dental treatments cover?

General dental treatments are everyday care that checks your mouth and treats common problems, not cosmetic, urgent or larger restorative care. Each topic has its own page. For ongoing care, see routine dental care at our practice, and our guide explains what happens at a routine dental appointment.

Dental check-ups

NHS guidance says a check-up examines your teeth, gums and mouth and includes advice and a date for your next visit. Read about dental check-ups.

Dental X-rays

An X-ray can check for problems such as tooth decay. The practice has digital X-rays, a panoramic (OPG) machine and a 3D (CBCT) scanner on site. See dental X-rays.

Tooth extraction

Extraction means removing a tooth. NHS guidance notes an infected tooth may need to come out if root canal treatment is not done. Our dentists carry out simple, surgical and same-day extractions. Read about tooth extraction.

What does NHS guidance say about wisdom teeth?

NHS guidance says a wisdom tooth causing no problems is usually left in place. Wisdom teeth usually come through in your teens or early 20s. Read about wisdom teeth.

Problems can arise when a wisdom tooth lacks room to come through fully or is blocked by another tooth (impacted). See wisdom tooth removal.

Where does routine care end?

Routine care ends where a tooth needs rebuilding, a new look or urgent help. For a crown to repair a damaged tooth, root canal treatment to save an infected one or a bridge to replace a missing one, see repairing and rebuilding damaged teeth. To change your teeth's colour, shape or straightness, see cosmetic dentistry. For sudden pain, swelling or a knocked-out tooth, see urgent dental care.

Frequently asked questions

What does a general dentist do?

A general dentist looks after routine oral health, preventing problems, checking for them and treating common ones. NHS guidance describes prevention advice on diet, smoking, alcohol and teeth-cleaning, and fillings that repair a hole caused by decay. Our dentists provide general dentistry for adults and children.

Can I book a hygiene visit without a check-up?

Yes. Hygiene visits are direct access, which means you can book without seeing a dentist first. Book hygiene appointments directly with our dental therapist, online through the booking portal, without registering as a patient. The hygiene pages explain what happens and how often to go.

Can children have routine dental treatment?

Yes. NHS advice is to start when your child's first milk teeth appear. Children are welcome from any age, and we usually suggest a first visit by 3. A child's first visit is just a look and a chat, with no treatment. See dental care for children.

Will routine dental treatment hurt?

Treatment that could hurt, such as having a tooth removed, is usually done under local anaesthetic. NHS guidance says it numbs the area while you stay awake. At Deepcar Dental Care, topical numbing gel is applied before every injection. Ask your dentist how long the numbness will last.

What if I feel anxious about dental treatment?

The practice books longer appointment slots for anxious patients and offers quiet times on request. A stop signal is agreed before treatment starts, as part of our care for anxious patients. Sedation is available in house, provided by Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, for adults whose suitability is confirmed at a separate pre-assessment.
