Why people drive from Barnsley to a dentist in Deepcar

Barnsley is the largest town we regularly see emergency patients from, and the reasons are practical rather than flattering to anyone. NHS urgent dental appointments in South Yorkshire exist, but there are not enough of them, and NHS South Yorkshire itself tells patients they may need to travel to get one. If you are going to travel anyway, a 30-minute drive to a practice that will see you today, with a dentist you can speak to on the phone at night, is often the shortest route out of pain. Ring 0114 288 2121 and ask for the first slot that day; no registration is needed. Roughly eight in ten of our emergency callers are treated on the same day.

This is not a suggestion that Barnsley lacks dentists. It is a page for people whose own practice cannot fit them in this week and who would rather drive than wait.

NHS 111, Barnsley Hospital and the limits of each

For NHS urgent dental care in Barnsley, call NHS 111 or use 111 online. Their dental triage runs 24 hours a day; the appointment it finds may be at a practice anywhere in South Yorkshire. Barnsley Hospital's emergency department on Gawber Road is open around the clock, and it is the correct place for a dental problem that has turned into a medical one: swelling spreading under the jaw or towards the eye, difficulty swallowing or breathing, a fever with facial swelling, a suspected fractured jaw, or bleeding that continues after half an hour of firm pressure.

What the emergency department will not do is take a tooth out or dress a cavity. For toothache, a lost filling, a broken tooth or a crown that has come off, a dentist is the only place that can actually fix the problem.

Two ways down from Barnsley: the M1 or the Penistone road

There are two sensible routes and they take about the same time. The quicker one on paper is Dodworth Road, the A628, to the M1 at junction 37, one junction south to 36, then the A61 and the A616 Stocksbridge bypass heading west; leave the A616 at the Deepcar junction and come down into the village, where the practice is on Manchester Road with its own free car park. Route planners quote about 18 kilometres and 17 minutes on empty roads; allow 25 to 30 in real traffic. The other is to stay on the A628 through Dodworth to Penistone, then take the A616 south to the same Deepcar junction. It avoids the motorway, though snow occasionally closes the tops around Penistone in winter.

Coming without a car from Barnsley Interchange

Public transport from Barnsley is possible but slow. From Barnsley Interchange, the Stagecoach 20 or 21 runs to Penistone; from there the South Pennine Community Transport 23 continues through Wortley and Deepcar to Stocksbridge, but it runs only a few times a day, so check the times before relying on it. The alternative is train to Sheffield, tram to Middlewood and the 57 bus up the valley, which comes to roughly an hour and a half.

Abscesses, wisdom teeth and teeth that need to come out

Barnsley patients tend to arrive later in the story than our local ones. The typical picture:

  • A tooth that has had two or three courses of antibiotics over the past year and swells again each time they stop. Antibiotics shrink an infection but cannot remove its source, which is why it keeps returning; the tooth needs a root canal or an extraction. See antibiotics for dental infection.
  • A broken-down back tooth that has been patched repeatedly and is now beyond saving, where the kindest option is to take it out today. See emergency tooth extraction.
  • A lower wisdom tooth that flares every few months and has finally produced a swelling that stops the mouth opening properly. See extractions and wisdom teeth.

For the second group we can usually do the extraction at the same visit as the examination, so you make one trip rather than two. A tooth that has been swelling on and off for a year has usually hollowed out a pocket in the bone the size of a pea, which is why the infection has somewhere to hide between antibiotic courses.

The money, in one paragraph

£30 for the examination with X-rays; an extraction from £120 to £260, a wisdom tooth £350 to £450, the first stage of a root canal from £200. Everything is confirmed in writing before you agree to it, there is an extra charge after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends, and finance through Tabeo is available for larger amounts. The full list is on emergency dental fees, and what to expect on the day is on same-day emergency appointment.

Questions, answered

Questions from Barnsley patients

Is it quicker to drive to Deepcar than to wait for NHS 111 from Barnsley?

Often, yes. NHS 111 will triage you at any hour, but the urgent slot it finds may be days away and elsewhere in South Yorkshire. We are 30 minutes from Barnsley and treat most emergency callers the day they ring.

Which motorway junction do I use from Barnsley?

Join the M1 at junction 37 off Dodworth Road, leave at junction 36, and follow the A61 then the A616 west to the Deepcar junction. If you would rather avoid the motorway, the A628 through Penistone to the A616 takes about the same time.

Can you take the tooth out on the same day I travel down?

Usually. If the X-rays show a straightforward extraction and you are medically fit for it, it is done at the same visit. Complicated roots or a tooth close to a nerve may need a planned surgical appointment.

Will I need to keep coming back to Deepcar afterwards?

Not necessarily. An extraction rarely needs a follow-up visit, and after a temporary filling or the first stage of a root canal you can finish the work with your own dentist or with us, whichever suits.

Do you see patients from Penistone, Dodworth and Wombwell too?

Yes. Penistone is about 15 minutes down the A616, Dodworth roughly 25 via the M1, and Wombwell around 35.

I called Friday evening to see if they had emergency appointments due to serious tooth pain. They were very polite and willing to accommodate. Due to me being a 45-minute drive away — the closest dentist I could find on Google that was open — they assured me they would see me when I got there. Upon arrival the staff were so polite and welcoming. The expertise and advice before the procedure was amazing. Definitely worth the trip to get the pain away. 100% recommend them.
