Ranmoor and Bents Green sit either side of Fulwood, and both send us a steady flow of emergency patients: students from the University of Sheffield's Ranmoor and Endcliffe villages who are a long way from their home dentist, and families from the streets around Bents Green and Ringinglow Road who want to be seen at the weekend. The trip is 16 to 18 kilometres depending on where you start and takes about 25 minutes. Deepcar Dental Care keeps emergency appointments open every day, opens at 8am and closes at 8pm, and the overnight line is answered personally by Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, the principal dentist. Around eight in ten people who ring in pain are treated the same day.
If you are a student, NHS 111 is the first place to try for NHS care; their dental triage is available 24 hours a day, though urgent appointments are limited and may be some distance away. The University Health Service points students to Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, on Wellesley Road at the bottom of the hill from Ranmoor, which runs a free weekday urgent clinic staffed by supervised students between 9 and 11 in the morning and 2 and 3 in the afternoon. Outside those hours, on Saturdays and Sundays, or when the clinic is full, a private emergency dentist is the alternative. For a swollen face that is closing an eye, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or bleeding that will not stop, adults go to the Northern General on Herries Road and children to Sheffield Children's Hospital on Western Bank.
From Ranmoor, with St John's spire behind you, head down Fulwood Road towards Broomhill and take Crookes Road up through Crookes, then Northfield Road, Heavygate Road and Walkley Road to Langsett Road, joining Middlewood Road, the A6102, at Hillsborough. Follow it north through Oughtibridge and Wharncliffe Side; it becomes Manchester Road in Deepcar and the practice is on the right with free parking in front. If Crookes is busy, Fulwood Road west to Crosspool and the A57 to Rivelin Valley Road brings you to Malin Bridge and the same Middlewood Road.
From Bents Green and Ringinglow Road, come down Ecclesall Road to Hunter's Bar, then Brocco Bank, Western Bank and the A61 to Penistone Road, turning onto the A6102 at Parkside Road; allow 25 to 30 minutes. By public transport, the 120 along Fulwood Road into the centre, the tram to Middlewood and the 57 bus up the valley is about an hour and a quarter.

The 120 bus along Fulwood Road into the city centre, the Yellow route tram to the Middlewood terminus, then the Stagecoach 57 towards Stocksbridge, which stops on Manchester Road in Deepcar. Allow about an hour and a quarter.
Yes, it is a short walk down the hill. Its urgent clinic is free but runs only on weekday mornings and early afternoons. For evenings, weekends and for being seen by a qualified dentist the same day, people come to us.
Do not wiggle it or push it back yourself. Keep him on soft food, hold a cold compress on the lip for the swelling and ring us; a loose adult tooth is usually splinted to its neighbours the same day, and the sooner the better.
