For most of north Sheffield we are not a long-distance option but the practice over the hill. Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, High Green, Burncross and Grenoside all sit within a quarter of an hour of Manchester Road, which is closer than the city centre and quicker than Hillsborough at school-run time. S35 has grown fast, with new estates around Thorncliffe, and the dentists there are full; a same-day slot is rare and a Sunday one rarer. We hold emergency appointments every day, treat about eight in ten emergency callers on the day they ring, and Dr Ijaz answers the overnight line himself. There is no registration; you call 0114 288 2121 and we tell you when to set off.
NHS 111 covers Chapeltown and Ecclesfield as part of NHS South Yorkshire, with dental triage 24 hours a day and urgent appointments offered across the four boroughs when the criteria are met. The Northern General on Herries Road is ten minutes down the A61 and has both a 24-hour emergency department and the region's maxillofacial unit, which makes it the right place for a broken jaw, a deep cut to the lip or tongue, or an infection that has become serious: swelling spreading down the neck or up to the eye, trouble swallowing or breathing, fever with a swollen face, or bleeding that will not stop. For toothache, a lost filling, a chipped tooth or a wobbly one, the emergency department will point you back to a dentist, and we are nearer to you than they are.
From Ecclesfield, go up The Common and through Grenoside on Main Street, then down Jawbone Hill into Oughtibridge, where you meet the A6102 Manchester Road; turn right and follow it through Wharncliffe Side to Deepcar. Number 334 is on Manchester Road as you come into the village, with free parking in front. From Chapeltown and High Green the quicker line is often the A61 north to Westwood roundabout beside M1 junction 35A, then the A616 west past Wortley to the Deepcar exit and down Carr Road; both routes take about 15 minutes. Jawbone Hill is steep and shaded and is the first road round here to ice, so use the A616 on frosty mornings.
Chapeltown station has trains to Sheffield twice an hour, but they go the wrong way for us, and Deepcar has no station. The direct public transport is the South Pennine Community Transport 201, which runs from Chapeltown through Tankersley to Deepcar and Stocksbridge a few times a day on weekdays, stopping on Manchester Road. Otherwise take a bus into Hillsborough and change to the Stagecoach 57, which runs up the valley twice an hour in the daytime. A taxi from Chapeltown is about 15 minutes.
Being close changes what we see. Chapeltown and Ecclesfield patients arrive early, with problems that have not had time to become dramatic:
A loose tooth is not always a lost tooth. After a knock we can splint it to its neighbours with a thin wire and composite for a couple of weeks while the ligament around the root repairs; done within a day or two, most such teeth tighten up. When looseness comes from gum disease there is no injury to heal, so the conversation is about cleaning, keeping what bone remains and, sometimes, planning for a replacement. Knowing which of the two you have is the first job of the examination, and the X-ray usually settles it.
The examination is £30 with X-rays and takes 15 minutes. Splinting, a filling, smoothing a sharp edge or an extraction is priced in writing before you agree to it; after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends there is an out-of-hours charge. Prices are listed on emergency dental fees, and the visit itself is described on same-day emergency appointment. Being 15 minutes away also makes follow-up simple, whether it is a permanent filling next week or a hygiene visit to protect a loosened tooth.

Yes. Chapeltown to Deepcar is about 15 minutes; Chapeltown to the city centre is 25 or more on a normal weekday. Ecclesfield is much the same.
About equal in normal conditions. Grenoside and Jawbone Hill is shorter; the A61 and A616 via junction 35A is easier in bad weather and at night.
Yes. Ring as soon as it happens; a tooth that has been pushed out of place is easiest to reposition within the first few hours.

The Northern General for a jaw injury, a deep facial cut, or an infection with spreading swelling, fever or difficulty swallowing. For a tooth problem without those, come to us.
