General Dentistry: Check-Ups, Fillings and Family Dental Care

General dentistry covers the routine care that keeps your natural teeth working: examinations, fillings, extractions, hygiene appointments and preventive advice. This page is for anyone choosing a dental practice rather than a single treatment. It explains what that care involves at Deepcar Dental Care, how your check-up interval is decided, how appointments work and who will treat you. Open seven days a week, 08:00 to 20:00.

What general dentistry covers

General dentistry is the routine assessment, treatment and prevention that keeps your natural teeth working, rather than any single procedure.

It brings together the dental examination, preventive dentistry and the everyday restorative work most people need at some point. A general dentist checks your teeth, gums and soft tissues, takes a medical and dietary history, and agrees a plan with you. Where a problem is found, the same clinician usually treats it: a filling, an extraction, root canal treatment or a denture.

Understanding how a tooth is built, from enamel, dentine and pulp outwards, explains why a small area of decay is straightforward to treat and a neglected one is not. That difference is the reason routine appointments exist at all.

Family dentistry sits inside general dentistry rather than beside it. Adults and children are assessed on the same principles, with different intervals and different priorities.

How we work

Our approach to long-term care

We set your check-up interval from your own risk of dental disease, not from a fixed six-month rule.

That follows National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance on the interval between oral health reviews. For adults, the recommended interval can be set anywhere from 3 to 24 months, and 24 months is the longest interval considered appropriate. For patients under 18, the interval runs from 3 to 12 months. Evidence suggests decay tends to progress more quickly in children and adolescents, and appears to move faster in baby teeth than in adult teeth.

3 to 24 months the recommended review interval for adults, set from your own risk
3 to 12 months the range that applies to patients under 18

What moves you along that range is your own history: how your gums are, whether you have had recent decay, what you eat and drink, whether you smoke, and what your medical history involves. NICE guidance asks that the recommended interval is discussed with you, recorded along with your response to it, and reviewed at each appointment rather than fixed for life.

The practical effect is that low-risk patients are not brought in unnecessarily, and higher-risk patients are seen often enough for problems to be caught while they are still small. Preventive dentistry covers the work that keeps you in the first group: monitoring gum health, watching areas that have started to change, and advice on cleaning and diet based on what your own examination found rather than general guidance.

Services at a glance

Our general dentistry services cover examinations, fillings, extractions, root canal treatment, dentures, hygiene appointments and dental care for children.

  • Examinations
  • Fillings
  • Extractions
  • Root canal treatment
  • Dentures
  • Hygiene appointments
  • Dental care for children

Two services sit slightly apart from the rest. Seeing our hygienist is a clinical appointment in its own right, aimed at gum health rather than appearance, and many patients attend on a separate cycle from their examinations. And dental care for children follows a different rhythm again, built around getting children comfortable in the chair before they ever need treatment.

Treatment beyond routine general dentistry, including cosmetic and restorative work, is discussed at assessment rather than assumed in advance.

Appointments

Appointment access and 8am to 8pm opening

We offer general dentistry appointments seven days a week, from 08:00 to 20:00, including evenings and weekends.

That covers the times most people can actually attend without taking a morning off work or pulling a child out of school. There is free on-site parking at the practice, and we do not operate a waiting list for appointments.

Outside our opening hours, our emergency line is answered by Dr Ijaz. If you need urgent dental treatment rather than a routine appointment, that is the route to use.

Routine appointments are booked through our online portal or by phone on 0114 288 2121, whichever you prefer.

Meet your dentist

Meet the clinical team

The clinical team at Deepcar Dental Care is led by Dr Ibraheem Ijaz, the practice principal, registered with the General Dental Council under number 301711.

Dr Ijaz holds a BDS and a BSc (Hons), an MSc from Leeds awarded in 2023, a postgraduate diploma in implant dentistry and a postgraduate certificate in restorative and aesthetic dentistry, both completed in 2024. He works alongside other dentists and hygienists at the practice, and he reviews the clinical information published on this site. The practice has more than 450 Google reviews.

Whoever you are booked with, your records stay with the practice rather than following one clinician, so the dentist treating you has your history in front of them.

What to expect

Becoming a new patient

You do not register with a dentist the way you register with a GP, and you are not tied to a catchment area. There is no list to join. You choose a practice and book an appointment.

Access to routine dental care is under real pressure across England. Analysis by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, using NHS Business Services Authority data published in August 2026, found that around three in five adults had not seen an NHS dentist in the previous two years.

An examination, not treatment

Your dentist assesses your teeth, gums and soft tissues, and takes your medical and dental history.

Findings talked through

What has been found is discussed with you before anything is agreed.

A written plan and the cost

If treatment is needed, you are given a written plan and the cost before it begins.

Where there is more than one reasonable way forward, you are given the options as well as a recommendation. Monitoring something rather than treating it straight away is a legitimate outcome of an appointment, and it is often the right one.

If it has been years since your last appointment, or if you feel anxious about dental treatment, say so when you book. It changes how the first appointment is run.

Fees

What routine dental care costs

Fees for general dentistry depend on which treatment you need, so we publish current prices rather than quoting a single figure here.

An examination, a course of hygiene treatment and restorative work such as a filling are priced separately, and the plan you are given after your first appointment reflects what you actually need. Nothing is added to that plan without being discussed with you first, and you will know the cost before treatment begins.

Payment options, including spreading the cost of larger treatment plans, are explained on our finance page.

Before you book

Frequently asked questions

What happens at a first dental examination?

Your dentist examines your teeth, gums and soft tissues, and takes a medical and dental history. X-rays are taken where they are clinically justified. You are then talked through what has been found and given a written plan if any treatment is recommended.

Can I be seen if I have not been to a dentist for years?

Yes, a long gap is common and it does not change how you are treated. The first appointment is an assessment rather than a lecture. Where there is a lot to work through, treatment is planned in stages and prioritised by what is causing harm, rather than presented as one long list to accept or refuse.

Is Deepcar Dental Care an NHS or a private practice?

Deepcar Dental Care is a private dental practice. Fees are published on our own price list rather than set by NHS treatment bands, and you are given the cost of any recommended treatment before it begins. There is no waiting list to join before you can book.

Do you treat children as well as adults?

Yes, children are seen as part of general dentistry. Their check-up intervals are set separately, and NICE guidance recommends that patients under 18 are reviewed at least every 12 months rather than the 24 months that can apply to a low-risk adult.

Can I get an appointment outside normal working hours?

Evening and weekend appointments are booked the same way as any other, through our online portal or by phone. In-person appointments run from 08:00 to 20:00 every day of the week, so those times are part of normal opening rather than an exception you have to request. Outside those hours, our emergency line is answered by Dr Ijaz.

What if I need treatment that is more than routine care?

Whether something can be treated here or needs a referral is confirmed at your assessment. Complex cases may involve input from another clinician, and that is arranged for you and explained before anything begins. You are not left to organise onward care yourself or to chase a referral.

Book an appointment

You do not need to know what you want done before you come in, and finding nothing that needs treating is a normal result.

If you are choosing a dental practice rather than a specific treatment, the first step is an examination. Book a consultation through our online portal or call 0114 288 2121.
