Crooked Front Teeth: Straighten or Disguise?
For adults deciding whether to straighten or disguise crooked, crowded or turned front teeth. It compares aligners and braces with composite bonding and porcelain veneers on enamel, time, cost and upkeep. The core trade-off: straightening keeps more natural enamel but takes months, while veneers are quicker but any enamel removed cannot be undone.

Should crooked front teeth be straightened or disguised?
Crooked front teeth can be straightened with clear aligners or braces, or disguised with composite bonding or porcelain veneers. Straightening moves the teeth; disguising changes how their surface looks. Both are part of improving how your teeth look.
Veneers used to make crooked teeth look straight are sometimes called "instant orthodontics", but the teeth are not moved. A Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) review concluded that aligning a healthy tooth with a porcelain veneer is not a conservative procedure, and that more conservative options, such as orthodontics, bleaching, direct bonding and enamel reshaping, should be offered.
Why do front teeth become crooked?
Crooked, or wonky, front teeth overlap, turn out of line (rotation) or stick out. NHS guidance lists teeth growing too close together, or sticking out, among the reasons for braces. The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) says teeth may move unpredictably as we get older, often with some crossing over and increased crowding. Crowding itself is covered under crowded teeth and how they are corrected.
How do straightening and disguising compare?
The table compares the three routes. Cells naming Deepcar Dental Care are practice arrangements; others are general evidence.
| Straightening (clear aligners or fixed braces) | Composite bonding | Porcelain veneers | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What changes | Where the teeth sit | Tooth shape, with composite added | A thin ceramic facing covers the front |
| Natural enamel | Moved, not reshaped; some plans reduce tooth width or need extractions to make space (BOS) | Mostly kept; minimal tooth preparation (2026 review) | Some need the front drilled away a little, not all (NHS) |
| Typical time | Aligners: months for small front-tooth corrections, often 12 months or more for fuller treatment. Fixed braces: usually 1 to 2 years (NHS) | Direct bonding at Deepcar Dental Care: typically a single visit in suitable cases | At Deepcar Dental Care: 2 to 6 visits, by complexity and number of veneers |
| Upkeep | Long-term retainers, because teeth tend to move back (BOS) | Can discolour, wear and stain; often needs repolishing or repair (2026 review) | Fracture, then debonding, seem to be the commonest problems; may need repair or replacement (2021 review) |
| Tends to suit | Mild to moderate crowding or irregularity for aligners (BOS) | Minor changes of tooth shape (2026 review) | A discoloured or chipped tooth (NHS) |
A fourth option, tooth recontouring, reshapes enamel to even out slightly uneven edges.
What does each route cost you?
For crooked teeth, straightening costs time, porcelain veneers can cost enamel, and every route needs upkeep. Deepcar Dental Care's fee list, checked on 17 October 2026, gives these prices:
- Clear aligners: from £1,495 per arch
- Composite Bonding Per Tooth: from £300
- All Ceramic Crowns & Veneers: from £750 - £1000
The fee list says all its prices are "from" prices, based on individual clinical needs. Fixed braces, composite veneers and tooth recontouring are not listed on it.

Which route keeps more of your natural teeth?
Straightening and direct bonding usually keep more natural tooth than porcelain veneers, the JADA review indicates. Removing enamel is irreversible: enamel forms once, before a tooth comes through, and cannot regenerate naturally afterwards, a 2026 review notes.
No route always keeps all tooth structure: BOS lists reducing tooth width as one way aligner plans make room, and some straightening cases involve extractions. No-preparation veneers keep more enamel, but a 2014 review says they suit selected cases only.
Veneers and bonding at Deepcar Dental Care
At Deepcar Dental Care, minimal-preparation and no-preparation porcelain veneers are offered where suitable, and direct composite bonding usually needs no drilling and no injection. Both are provided by our cosmetic dentists, and cosmetic planning includes a mock-up in the mouth before committing.
How long does each route take?
Bonding is generally the quickest route and straightening the slowest, with porcelain veneers in between. Aligner time depends on how far the teeth need to move, and your 3D aligner plan shows the planned length before you commit.
When does each route tend to suit?
Mild to moderate crowding may suit straightening teeth with removable aligners. BOS says aligner treatment for severe crowding, extractions, complex movements or a jaw size or position problem may need additional techniques, such as fixed braces. Composite bonding and porcelain veneers suit changes of shape or colour rather than position.
Straightening at Deepcar Dental Care
At Deepcar Dental Care, straightening is for adults, and aligner treatment covers mild to moderate crowding and spacing; extraction and complex cases are assessed case by case, and some need braces or a combined approach. Clear aligners and fixed metal, ceramic and lingual braces are provided by our dentists. Where they are not the right tool, for example a problem from jaw position that may need surgery, you may be referred to an orthodontic practice or a hospital orthodontic department.
With more than one smile concern, our guide to working out which option suits you sets the options side by side.
What are the limits of each route?
Each route has limits. Composite bonding suits minor shape changes and can discolour, wear or stain (2026 review). Limits for straightening and porcelain veneers:
- Straightening: a new aligner can cause mild pressure or soreness for the first few days, and teeth may be sore for a few days after braces are fitted. NHS guidance says to contact the team treating you if teeth are painful for more than a few days after braces are fitted or adjusted, gums are very red, swollen or painful, or braces break.
- Porcelain veneers: the JADA review calculated how much misalignment a veneer can correct without harming its success; most of the preparation, and all its margins, must be in enamel, where the bond is stronger than to dentine. See your dentist if a veneer chips, cracks or comes loose.
Frequently asked questions
Can crooked teeth be fixed without braces?
Sometimes. Clear aligners are removable and move the teeth without fixed braces, and BOS describes them for mild to moderate problems. Composite bonding or porcelain veneers can disguise small irregularities without moving teeth, though veneers may need some enamel removed.
Do veneers straighten teeth?
No. Veneers cover the front of the teeth so they look straighter, but the teeth stay where they are. The JADA review found porcelain veneers cannot correct uneven gum margins, or uneven gum between the teeth, caused by misaligned teeth.
Is treatment for crooked teeth available on the NHS?
NHS guidance says braces are usually only free for under-18s whose teeth affect their day-to-day life. Adults usually have to pay for braces. Veneers are generally only available privately, unless you can show a clinical need for them, and cosmetic treatments are usually private.
Will straightened teeth stay straight?
Usually only with retainers. BOS says that without retainers teeth will go crooked again, and the longer you wear them, the longer teeth can stay straight. Retainers are long-term, as teeth can move at any age. Your retainer routine and type are usually set at the end of treatment.
Can I have aligners first and then bonding?
Yes. At Deepcar Dental Care, crowding can be addressed with clear aligners first, and bonding is ideally done once aligner treatment has finished. Align-and-whiten and align-whiten-and-bond packages are available. Whitening before bonding is optional, and whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings.
