Tooth Recontouring: Reshaping Enamel Without Adding Material
Tooth recontouring, or enameloplasty, reshapes a tooth by selectively removing enamel and polishing it, with no material added. This page covers what it can and cannot change, how it is done, comfort, why the change cannot be undone, cost, and when edge bonding suits better. The core point: recontouring can only take enamel away, and removed enamel does not grow back.

What is tooth recontouring?
Tooth recontouring is a cosmetic procedure that changes a tooth's outline by selectively removing and reshaping enamel, without adding any restorative material. It is also called enameloplasty, enamel recontouring or tooth reshaping, and people sometimes describe it as filing or smoothing teeth.
A 2024 narrative review of how chipped and fractured incisal edges, the biting edges of front teeth, are treated calls recontouring the subtractive technique. It sets it against additive techniques, which build the tooth up with composite placed directly or with a veneer made in a laboratory. Recontouring takes place in enamel, the outermost layer of the crown; how enamel sits over the tissue beneath it is explained in our guide to enamel, dentine and pulp.
What can tooth recontouring change?
Tooth recontouring changes the outline of a tooth, not where the tooth sits. The 2024 review of front-tooth edge fractures calls it not the treatment of choice, but says it could be indicated in some cases. The uses it lists include reshaping a tooth whose shape the patient finds unattractive and treating fractures along the enamel edge of front teeth, the review's own subject. NHS advice for any chipped, cracked or broken tooth is to see a dentist.
The 2024 review of front-tooth edge fractures describes recontouring as simple, quick and economical, an option for a patient who prefers a fast treatment or for moments of transition. Against that, it lists recontouring as not conservative of tooth tissue and not reversible, and it can mean reshaping the matching tooth as well. Removed enamel does not grow back. When front teeth look uneven, our page on uneven teeth explains whether the unevenness comes from the teeth themselves, the gum line or tooth position.
What can't tooth recontouring do?
Tooth recontouring cannot add anything to a tooth, so it cannot lengthen a short edge, close a gap or rebuild a missing piece. The 2024 review of front-tooth edge fractures lists a tooth with a short crown as a contraindication. It also warns of a possible aesthetic limit: changing one tooth's shape can mean reshaping the healthy matching tooth on the other side as well. The same review says that treating edge fractures, whether by removing enamel or by adding material, also means controlling their cause, such as grinding or clenching, acid erosion or habits like nail-biting, which it calls fundamental to the long-term outlook.
Enamel is a thin layer. A 2024 retrospective study of 800 archived CBCT scans of dental patients aged 18 to 60 in one region of Romania measured sound, well-aligned upper central incisors with no decay, fillings or root canal treatment, and did not take tooth wear into account. On the front surface, enamel averaged about 1.1 mm thick 1 mm from the biting edge, with single readings as low as 0.73 mm.
At 1 mm above where enamel meets root it averaged between about 0.45 and 0.5 mm, with single readings as low as 0.28 mm. These figures are the depth of the enamel layer on the front surface, from its outer face to the dentine beneath. They are not an amount that can be taken away, and they do not show how much a biting edge could be shortened.
Recontouring does not move teeth. Removing enamel where neighbouring teeth touch, called interproximal reduction, is a separate technique used in orthodontic treatment. It belongs with braces and clear aligner therapy, not with reshaping a tooth's outline.
How is tooth recontouring generally done?
A 2024 review of treatments for chipped and fractured front-tooth edges describes three stages: marking, shaping and polishing.
- The areas to be changed can be marked on the tooth with a dark pen or pencil, which guides the removal and gives a preview of the result.
- The enamel is shaped with a diamond bur and abrasive strips.
- The new surface is finished with a carbide bur and polished with a silicone cup.
Does tooth recontouring hurt?
Enameloplasty does not need local anaesthetic, according to the 2024 review of front-tooth edge fractures. Working without it, the review adds, also gives an indication of how sensitive the tooth may be. The enamel that recontouring removes does not grow back.
The 2024 review reports no figures for sensitivity after recontouring. In general, sensitivity involves the layer beneath the enamel: the Oral Health Foundation explains that dentine contains tiny channels linked to the tooth's nerve. When enamel wears away or gums shrink back, it says, dentine is exposed, and heat, cold or sweetness reach the nerve more easily and cause pain.
For sensitive teeth, the Foundation advises seeing a dentist when the pain is severe or comes on suddenly, when only one tooth is affected, or when sensitivity lasts more than a few weeks. It says these could point to tooth decay, a cracked tooth, gum problems or infection.

Can removed enamel grow back?
No. Tooth recontouring cannot be undone, because the enamel it removes does not grow back. According to a 2026 narrative review of minimally invasive ways to treat decay, enamel is formed once, before the tooth erupts, and cannot regenerate naturally afterwards. The 2024 review of front-tooth edges lists two related drawbacks of recontouring: it is not conservative of tooth tissue, and it is not reversible.
When is edge bonding a better choice than tooth recontouring?
For chipped and fractured front-tooth edges, the 2024 review says adding material, with composite or a veneer, appears to be preferred in most cases. It advises limiting recontouring to a few selected cases. Among the ways of adding material, it lists small restorations as a contraindication for veneers made in a laboratory, which need more extensive preparation of the tooth than direct composite.
In the 2024 review, direct composite rebuilds the edge, in general with minimal preparation, and can restore the tooth's original shape, which the review rates as more aesthetic than the subtractive technique. Its listed uses for direct composite include reconstruction after small tooth injuries, and it lists large lesions in a tooth with low mechanical resistance as a contraindication. Drawbacks it lists for composite include possible detachment and discolouration that affects its appearance over time.
It also cites, from earlier studies, five-year survival of 85 to 89% for composite restorations on front teeth, and names fracture of the composite, most often in the first year, as the main reason they fail. It gives no survival figures for recontouring.
| In the 2024 review of front-tooth edge fractures | Tooth recontouring | Direct composite on the edge |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Removes and reshapes enamel; adds nothing | Adds composite to rebuild the edge |
| Enamel | Removed, and not reversible | Minimal preparation is generally enough; more may be needed if the edge is deeply undermined |
| Rebuilding a lost edge | Not possible | Possible after small injuries; large lesions in a weak tooth are a contraindication |
| Strengths include | Simple and quick | Can restore the original shape; more aesthetic |
| Drawbacks include | Not conservative of tooth tissue; may mean reshaping the matching tooth | Possible detachment; discolouration over time; fracture of the composite, the main cause of failure |
How composite is used to rebuild the biting edge is covered on our page about edge bonding.
When is a tooth's shape worth showing to a dentist?
Speak to a dentist if a front tooth has chipped, looks uneven or has an edge you would like reshaped.
NHS guidance says chipping, breaking or cracking a tooth is usually not serious; a dentist should be able to deal with it. It recommends seeing a dentist when you or your child has chipped, cracked or broken a tooth. For urgent treatment it suggests calling a dentist first, since a closed practice's answerphone may say what to do; without a dentist, or if no emergency appointment is available, call 111 for advice or find a dentist nearby and ask for an emergency appointment.
Is tooth recontouring offered at Deepcar Dental Care?
Yes. Deepcar Dental Care offers tooth recontouring and reshaping among its cosmetic treatments.
How much does tooth recontouring cost?
Tooth recontouring and reshaping has no line on the fee list.
Frequently asked questions
Is tooth reshaping safe?
A 2024 review of chipped and fractured front-tooth edges gives no safety or complication figures for tooth reshaping. It says reshaping is not the treatment of choice but could be indicated in some cases, and that the amount of enamel removed must be carefully and precisely defined, respecting symmetry and minimal invasiveness. Removed enamel does not regrow.
Is tooth recontouring available on the NHS?
Tooth recontouring is not named on the NHS dental services page. That page says NHS care covers treatment that is clinically necessary for a healthy mouth, and that cosmetic treatment is usually private. Your dentist has to tell you which treatments are available on the NHS, which are private only, and the cost of each.
Can recontouring be combined with a filling or bonding?
Sometimes. A 2024 review of front-tooth edge fractures lists shaping a tooth before a small restoration that may be hard to retain among the cases where recontouring could be indicated. For a just-chipped tooth, NHS guidance mentions smoothing it down and filling it, or fitting a crown. For any chipped, cracked or broken tooth, it advises seeing a dentist.
