What does this section cover?
This section has its own pages for four types of cosmetic dentistry: porcelain veneers, gum contouring, tooth recontouring and smile makeovers. The practice also offers gap closure and black triangle closure (in the composite bonding section), full mouth cosmetic rehabilitation and replacing old, discoloured fillings. For the wider discipline, read about cosmetic dentistry.
Which treatments keep the most natural tooth?
Treatments are grouped by type of change, not by measured amount.
- Teeth whitening: nothing is removed or added.
- Gum contouring: only the gum is reshaped.
- Composite bonding: composite is added, usually with no drilling.
- Clear aligners: teeth move, with enamel slimmed between them only where needed.
- Tooth recontouring: a small amount of enamel is removed.
- Porcelain veneers: a little enamel is often removed, unless a no-preparation design suits.
- Ceramic crowns: the whole tooth is covered, removing the most.
Gum contouring
Gum contouring reshapes an uneven gum line by removing gum tissue. At the practice it is done with a scalpel. Evidence suggests it suits cases where only the gum needs reshaping and enough firm, attached gum remains afterwards. Read about reshaping the gum line.

Tooth recontouring
Tooth recontouring, also called enameloplasty, smooths uneven or pointed edges without adding material. Removed enamel does not grow back. Read about reshaping enamel without adding material.
Porcelain veneers
A porcelain veneer is a thin ceramic facing bonded to the front of a tooth to change its colour, shape or size. Read about porcelain veneers.
Smile makeovers
A smile makeover combines several treatments in one planned sequence. Read about smile makeover plans and what makes a smile look natural.
Which treatments have their own sections?
Composite bonding, teeth whitening and clear aligners have their own sections. The composite bonding section includes composite veneers, teeth whitening at Deepcar Dental Care includes a dentist-supervised take-home course, and our section on straightening teeth with removable aligners covers treatment for adults. Crowns that repair damage belong to repairing and rebuilding damaged teeth.
Frequently asked questions
How much do cosmetic dental treatments cost?
On the current fee list, composite bonding is from £300 per tooth and teeth whitening £350 to £550. All-ceramic crowns and veneers are from £750 to £1,000, and clear aligners from £1,495 per arch. Our cosmetic cost page explains what it costs.
How do I choose between cosmetic treatments?
Start with what you want to change and how much natural tooth you would alter. Cosmetic planning at the practice includes a trial smile, a written plan and a second consultation before you commit. Our decision guide helps with working out which option suits you.
Can cosmetic treatments be combined?
Yes, in a planned order. Bonding is ideally done once aligner treatment has finished, and whitening before bonding is optional. Whitening lightens natural teeth only, so bonding, crowns, veneers and fillings keep their colour. The guide to cosmetic dentistry sets out the usual order.
Do teeth and gums need to be healthy before bonding or whitening?
Yes. Decay and gum disease are treated before composite bonding starts. Whitening is not suitable while either is active, in line with NHS guidance. A hygiene visit is included before bonding and recommended before whitening. Our hygiene appointments page covers gum health.
Are cosmetic dentistry options available on the NHS in the UK?
Generally not. Teeth whitening is not available on the NHS, and NHS guidance says its chemicals should only be used by dental professionals. Veneers are generally private unless there is a clinical need. Braces are available on the NHS for children and, occasionally, adults, depending on clinical need.
