What does living with braces involve?

Living with braces means caring for a fixed brace between appointments: cleaning it, eating in ways that protect it, staying comfortable and checking it. A British Orthodontic Society (BOS) leaflet calls a balanced, healthy diet and excellent oral hygiene very important during treatment.

What is the first week with braces like?

NHS guidance says braces may feel strange to start with and your teeth may feel sore for a few days after fitting. Soft food and painkillers may help then. A BOS leaflet calls slightly sore teeth common for 3 to 5 days after first fitting and after each adjustment; another advises checking your braces regularly for bent or loose parts, without fiddling. As non-urgent advice, NHS guidance says to contact whoever is treating your braces about teeth still painful more than a few days after fitting or an adjustment, very red, swollen or painful gums, or broken braces.

To ask about braces, book online or call 0114 288 2121.

Where is each part of daily care covered?

Each part of daily care has its own page. Cleaning around a fixed brace, including between the teeth and under the brace, is covered in our guide to cleaning your teeth with braces.

A BOS leaflet says your diet will need to change with braces, so you do not damage your teeth or the brace. Foods to avoid or cut up are on our page about eating with braces.

Comfort with a fixed brace has its own page: what guidance says to expect after fitting and adjustments, what can help, and when to contact whoever is treating you. See discomfort with braces.

Brace repairs between appointments have their own page: what to do meanwhile, who to contact and the effect on treatment time. See a broken bracket or wire.

Enamel protection during braces covers what decalcification is, how its risk can be lowered and what follows once the brace is off. If you notice marks on your teeth, show them to a dentist; more is on our page about white marks after braces.

Which topics belong to other sections?

Brace appointments, from fitting to removal, are set out on the orthodontic treatment process page. Life with clear aligners belongs under clear aligner therapy, and the main orthodontics page introduces orthodontic treatment.

Gum care in general belongs to hygiene appointments, and dental emergencies to urgent dental care.

Are braces offered at Deepcar Dental Care?

Yes, for adults only. Fixed braces at Deepcar Dental Care, from our dentists, include metal, ceramic and lingual braces. Problems our dentists treat include mild to moderate crowding and spacing, and they offer bite correction; extraction and complex cases are assessed case by case.

Frequently asked questions

How long might you be wearing a fixed brace?

Usually around 1 to 2 years, as general NHS guidance; your own treatment plan confirms the timing. A BOS leaflet says treatment with braces in general may take 6 to 30 months, depending on the problem, and very difficult problems may take longer.

Why can a fixed brace not be taken out to clean?

Because it is glued to the teeth. A BOS leaflet explains that fixed braces are glued on and cannot be removed for cleaning, whereas removable braces can. So cleaning and eating work around the brackets and wire while it is on.

Does the result depend on the patient as well as the brace?

Very much so. A BOS leaflet says success depends very much on your commitment to treatment: patients who cooperate well and wear their retainers as advised get good results, and those who do not are not likely to get the result they wanted.
