Lost or Broken Retainer: What to Do Now
For adults who have lost or broken a retainer after braces or aligners: how quickly teeth can move, what to do today, using an older retainer, a broken bonded retainer, replacements and charges. The British Orthodontic Society's 2019 leaflet says to ring for an appointment as soon as possible and not wait for a review, as teeth may move while a retainer is out.

How quickly can teeth move without a retainer?
Soon enough that guidance says to act promptly, not wait. Leeds Teaching Hospitals' 2025 clear-retainer leaflet asks its patients to get in touch quickly after a loss or breakage, so teeth do not have the chance to move.
The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) singles out the first months without a brace as a time of particular relapse risk, while the bone and tissues round the roots adjust, and says the risk persists in the longer term.
A 2017 study of 21 people, mean age 16, measured the mobility (looseness) of an upper front tooth during retention after braces. Mobility was very high in the first 2 days after the braces came off, lower after a week and significantly lower at 3 months than just after removal, varying significantly between people. It measured looseness, not drift, and did not study lost retainers. Why retainers matter is on our page about keeping your teeth in their new position.
What should you do today if your retainer is lost or broken?
Contact a dentist promptly and protect any retainer you still have. Steps from UK and US guidance:
- Arrange an appointment as soon as possible: BOS's 2019 leaflet says not to wait for your next review, as your teeth may shift while you are without a retainer.
- If a bonded (fixed) retainer is loose or broken, seek advice at once: BOS says that once the glue holding a tooth fails, that tooth may begin drifting out of position.
- If a bonded retainer has failed and you also have a removable one, a 2019 UK clinical guide says to wear the removable one full time, except for eating and cleaning, if comfortable, until you are seen.
- Do not force a retainer if it will not seat under gentle pressure, and stop wearing a removable one that is cracked or has a loose wire; contact a dentist instead, as the AAO, a US orthodontic association, advises.
- Do not reshape a retainer at home with hot water or other do-it-yourself methods, the AAO says. Keep removable retainers in a protective box, and bring your retainers when you are seen, as BOS asks.
Can you wear an older retainer while you wait?
Only if it still seats fully with gentle pressure, without significant discomfort, and is undamaged, going by AAO guidance. If discomfort persists, the fit worsens or you are unsure about wearing it, it says to contact a dentist.
A retainer reflects where your teeth were when it was made, the AAO explains, so an older one may not match teeth that have moved since. Forcing it can crack or distort clear plastic and damage wires or acrylic parts.
Significant pain is not proof that an old retainer is working, the AAO says: if it hurts to put in or wear, or has to be forced, stop and contact a dentist. Wear routines for a retainer that fits are on our page about how long you need to wear a retainer.
What should you do if a bonded retainer breaks or comes loose?
Contact a dentist promptly: a 2019 UK clinical guide says to return as a matter of urgency if a bonded retainer becomes loose or breaks.
Bonded retainers can fail where the wire meets the composite glue, where the glue meets the enamel, or through a wire fracture, the 2019 guide says. A 2022 Queen Victoria Hospital NHS leaflet asks its own patients with a broken or loose fixed retainer to tell the hospital immediately and wear their removable retainer over it until they are seen.
Generally, the 2019 guide says, if the composite comes away completely from one tooth, cleaning the tooth and replacing the composite is enough. If the composite is hard to clear from the wire, the retainer may need replacing, and a fractured retainer needs removing and replacing.

How is a lost or broken retainer replaced?
A replacement may need a new scan or impression so it matches your teeth as they are now, the AAO says.
For removable retainers, BOS calls repair or replacement a relatively simple task. A 2019 UK clinical guide says a minor or clean break in an acrylic retainer is often easy to repair, calling it good practice to send an impression taken with the retainer in place to a laboratory. A break in the wirework needs a remake, and a broken clear (vacuum-formed) retainer needs replacing.
If teeth have shifted so a retainer no longer seats, the AAO says it may need adjusting or replacing, and that if more tooth movement is necessary, a limited course of orthodontic treatment may come first for some people. What relapse involves is on our page about teeth moved back after braces.
BOS says you may be charged for a replacement removable retainer. BOS's 2019 leaflet adds that NHS retention care lasts 12 months, after which retainer repair or replacement is paid for privately.
When should you speak to a dentist?
As soon as possible after a loss or breakage, and whenever a retainer causes pain, is damaged or no longer fits as it once did.
BOS and the AAO give those triggers. Speak to a dentist too, the AAO advises, if a replacement or older retainer will not seat with gentle pressure, part of it stands away from the teeth, or it will not stay in place. BOS's 2019 leaflet warns that teeth which have moved may be difficult to correct.
Are retainers on the practice's fee list?
Retainers have no line on the practice's current fee list.
Frequently asked questions
Can you keep wearing a cracked retainer?
Not if the damage is visible: the AAO says to stop wearing a removable retainer with cracks or loose wires and have it checked. Removable retainers can wear, crack, bend or distort, it notes. BOS's 2019 leaflet asks you to contact a dentist promptly if a retainer is damaged, since teeth may shift while you cannot wear it.
Can you tell if a bonded retainer has broken?
Not always. A 2019 UK clinical guide says a break in a fixed retainer can go unnoticed by the patient, which is one reason it gives for combining it with a removable retainer in some cases. BOS describes fixed retainers as needing regular inspection, because a tooth may drift if its glue fails.
Does a retainer that no longer fits mean starting treatment again?
Not necessarily. For a retainer that is damaged, warped or no longer fits fully, the AAO says the outcome may be a replacement retainer, an adjustment, monitoring or further orthodontic care, not automatically starting treatment. It says the right option depends on your current teeth and bite.
