For adults comparing three orthodontic appliances, fixed metal, ceramic and lingual braces: where each sits and how visible it is, with a page for each. Aligners have their own section. What does this section cover?

This section covers three fixed brace options: metal, ceramic and lingual. The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) calls fixed braces the most popular type of orthodontic appliance. Aligners have their own section under clear aligner therapy. Our orthodontic treatment page and orthodontic treatment guide give the wider picture.

How do the types of braces compare?

All three are fixed to the teeth, and BOS says all brace systems fixed to the teeth allow greater three-dimensional control than removable treatments. Metal shows most, ceramic blends in and lingual is concealed.

TypeHow visible it isControl of tooth movement
Fixed metal bracesUsually silver-coloured; shows more than tooth-coloured braces (BOS)Fixed to the teeth
Ceramic bracesTooth-coloured, and the wires can be tooth-coloured too (BOS)Fixed to the teeth
Lingual bracesConcealed on the inside of the teeth (BOS)Fixed to the teeth

Where does each type of brace sit?

Metal braces usually sit on the front of the teeth. NHS guidance says a wire joining brackets glued to each tooth puts slight pressure on the teeth, moving them over time. Read about fixed braces.

Ceramic braces sit on the front of the teeth, with brackets in a hard ceramic that blends in with the tooth colour, BOS explains. Read about ceramic braces.

Lingual braces sit on the inside surface of the teeth, and the name comes from lingua, the Latin word for tongue, BOS explains. Read about lingual braces.

Does the practice offer all three types of brace?

Yes. At Deepcar Dental Care, our dentists offer fixed metal, ceramic and lingual braces, as well as clear aligners, to adults only. Among the problems they treat are mild to moderate crowding and spacing; they also offer bite correction. Complex and extraction cases are assessed case by case; some need braces or a combined approach.

Frequently asked questions

How is the type of brace chosen?

Case by case. BOS says many factors need weighing before deciding the type for each patient, and that all the possible types for your problem should be discussed with you, with the risks and benefits of each. It warns that manufacturers' claims of better results are often not backed by scientific evidence.

Does having a brace fitted hurt?

Fitting should not hurt or need an anaesthetic, BOS says. Moving teeth often ache and feel tender for a few days, or longer for some. NHS guidance says to get in touch with the team treating your braces if pain lasts over a few days after fitting or adjustment, gums are very red, swollen or painful, or braces break.

Can the type of brace change how long treatment takes?

Ceramic braces may take longer, BOS says, because the wire slides through their brackets less freely. For fixed braces in general, BOS gives a usual treatment time of 18 to 24 months and says more difficult problems may take longer. Your treatment plan confirms your own timescale.
