What does this restorative aftercare section cover?
This restorative aftercare section covers recovery after a filling, crown or root canal treatment and long-term care for restorations, not treatment itself. Treatments that save natural teeth, rather than replacing them with implants, sit under repairing and rebuilding damaged teeth, and our guide to restoring damaged teeth sets out the options.
What happens after restorative treatment?
An NHS Western Isles leaflet says a filled tooth may feel sensitive or different to bite on. If this has not settled in a few weeks, or is very painful and painkillers do not help, contact your dentist. Read what is normal after a filling.
If a crown comes off, NHS Wales advice is to see a dentist, keeping the crown safe to take with you, and to avoid biting hard foods on that tooth. Read about settling in after a crown is fitted.
NHS guidance says numbness after root canal treatment can last several hours, and soreness around the tooth should ease within a couple of weeks. Take painkillers if needed and avoid knocking your mouth. Read about recovery after root canal treatment.
To help a crown last, Oral Health Foundation advice is to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth daily, avoid biting hard objects such as ice and see your dental team regularly. Read about long-term maintenance for restorations.

When do you need urgent dental care?
Pain, swelling or injury that cannot wait is covered by urgent dental care, not this aftercare section. NHS guidance says:
- See a dentist if toothache lasts more than 2 days, does not ease with painkillers, or comes with a high temperature, pain when you bite, red gums, a bad taste or a swollen cheek or jaw.
- Ask for an urgent dentist appointment or contact NHS 111 if you think you have a dental abscess.
- Call 999 or go to A&E, without driving yourself, if your eye area or neck swells, your mouth is very swollen, it is hard to breathe, speak, swallow or open your mouth, or you have a painful eye or sudden eyesight problems.
For non-urgent concerns, like sensitivity that has not settled, contact Deepcar Dental Care.
Frequently asked questions
What aftercare cover does Deepcar Dental Care offer?
At Deepcar Dental Care, 12-month aftercare cover applies to several treatments. For fillings, crowns and bridges, dentures, and porcelain veneers, the cover gives free repair, free replacement or remake, and free adjustments. Cover does not apply where damage results from accidental trauma or infection, and for dentures gum recession is also excluded.
Should you see a GP about a problem with a filling or crown?
No. NHS guidance says not to go to a GP with a dental problem, because GPs cannot provide dental treatment. Contact a dentist instead. NHS guidance adds that a closed practice's answerphone may say what to do, and NHS 111 can advise if you cannot get an emergency appointment.
Can you book a hygiene appointment without seeing a dentist first?
Yes. Deepcar Dental Care offers direct access, so you can book hygiene appointments with our dental therapist without seeing a dentist first. You do not need to be registered as a patient, and appointments can be booked online through the booking portal.
