What does this section cover?

The restorative treatments section has five treatment pages. Other restorative treatments at the practice include tooth wear management, bite raising appliances, full mouth rehabilitation, apicectomy and crown lengthening, described under restorative dentistry, which is about keeping natural teeth. No overseas laboratory work is used. The guide to restoring damaged teeth covers prognosis, longevity and cost.

How do the types of dental restoration compare by coverage?

The main restorations form a continuum: the more of a tooth that is damaged or missing, the more the restoration covers or replaces. Covering more of a tooth repairs more extensive damage, but preparing it usually removes more natural tooth.

RestorationWhat it covers or replaces
White fillingA hole in the tooth
InlayPart of the biting surface, within the cusps (the raised points of a back tooth)
OnlayOne or more cusps
CrownThe whole visible tooth
BridgeOne or more missing teeth, held by neighbouring teeth
DentureMissing teeth, removable

White fillings

A white filling repairs a hole in a tooth with tooth-coloured material, the least coverage in this section. Options include replacing old amalgam fillings with white fillings.

Inlays and onlays

An inlay sits within the cusps of a back tooth, and an onlay also covers one or more cusps. Options include composite and ceramic inlays and onlays.

Dental crowns

A crown is a cap covering the whole visible tooth where it has broken, decayed or been damaged. Options include post crowns, with fibre posts or cast metal posts. Read about dental crowns.

Dental bridges

A bridge is a fixed replacement for one or more missing teeth, held by one or more neighbouring teeth. Options include conventional, adhesive and Maryland, and cantilever dental bridges.

Dentures

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth. Options include flexible and immediate dentures, and relines that refit a denture as the gums and jawbone change shape. Read about dentures.

Which treatments are covered in other sections?

Root canal treatment and dental implants have their own sections. Treatment of the pulp at the centre of a tooth is covered under root canal treatment, with a comparison of saving a tooth compared with removing it. Implants, fixed to the jawbone, also replace missing teeth, and dentures held on implants belong to that service: see replacing a tooth with an implant.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a filling, an inlay or a crown?

An examination decides it, because the choice depends on how much sound tooth remains and where the damage is. A filling repairs a hole and an inlay sits within the cusps, while broken or weakened cusps may need an onlay or a crown to cover and protect them. Our decision guide helps with working out which option suits.

How much do restorative treatments cost?

Costs vary with the type of restoration, the material and how much damage needs repairing, so each fee depends on the tooth. The practice's current fee list shows "from" prices for that reason. The restorative cost page explains what it costs and what changes the price.

Do restoration types differ in lifespan?

Yes. Typical lifespans are 5 to 10 years for a white filling and 5 to 20 years for a crown or a bridge. A denture usually lasts 5 to 10 years before it needs relining or remaking. Outcomes depend on the individual patient, their oral hygiene and their habits.
