Types of Composite Bonding Treatment
Types of composite bonding differ by how much of the tooth they cover. Edge bonding rebuilds the biting edge, chip repair rebuilds a chipped area, gap closure and black triangle closure add composite to the sides of teeth, and a composite veneer covers the whole front surface. Each type has its own page.

What does this page cover?
This page routes you to the right type of composite bonding, a way of reshaping teeth with composite. At Deepcar Dental Care, bonding options include a single chipped tooth, four, six, eight and ten tooth packages, a full upper arch and a full smile, upper and lower.
How do the types of composite bonding compare?
Edge bonding covers the biting edge, while full bonding, a composite veneer, covers the whole front surface. Partial bonding covers part of a tooth.
| Type | Area covered | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Edge bonding | Biting edge | Worn, short or uneven edges |
| Composite veneer | Whole front surface | Shape, size and colour |
| Gap closure | Sides beside a gap | Width, to close a gap |
| Chip repair | Chipped area only | The missing piece |
| Black triangle closure | Sides near the gum | Dark space the gum does not fill |
Edge bonding
Edge bonding adds composite to the biting edges of front teeth that are worn, short or uneven. It can be done across the front teeth together. Read about rebuilding worn front-tooth edges.
Composite veneers
A composite veneer covers the whole front surface of a tooth. Both direct veneers, built on the tooth, and indirect veneers, made in a laboratory, are available. Read about composite veneers.

Gap closure
Gap closure adds composite to the teeth either side of a gap, called a diastema, to close it. It widens teeth rather than moving them. Read about closing gaps between teeth with composite.
Chip repair
Chip repair rebuilds chipped teeth with composite. NHS guidance says a chipped tooth is usually not serious and a dentist should be able to treat it. A badly broken tooth with an exposed nerve may need root canal treatment. Read about repairing a chipped tooth.
Black triangle closure
Black triangle closure adds composite near the gum line to fill the dark space between front teeth. Gum disease and decay are treated before bonding. Read about closing black triangles between teeth.
What should you know about composite bonding?
Direct bonding adds tooth-coloured resin composite and usually needs no drilling and no injection. Bonding typically lasts around five years, varying from person to person, and composite can chip or stain over time. Pricing is set out in what composite bonding costs.
Where are other bonding topics covered?
Each appointment is set out in the composite bonding procedure step by step, and the complete guide to composite bonding gives the overview, including aftercare. Weighing up porcelain? See choosing between bonding and veneers.
Frequently asked questions
Which type of composite bonding do I need?
The right type depends on what you want to change. That might be an edge, a chip, a gap, a dark space near the gum or the whole front surface, and each type covers a different part of the tooth. If you are still working out which option suits, start there.
Can composite bonding be used on back teeth?
Yes, in some cases. Composite can be added to worn back teeth to rebuild the bite, and Deepcar Dental Care offers this. A European consensus on severe tooth wear advises delaying restoration as long as possible and, when needed, a conservative, minimally invasive approach alongside preventive measures. If you grind your teeth, a night guard is required and charged separately.
Should teeth be whitened before composite bonding?
Whitening before composite bonding is optional, not required. Whitening lightens natural teeth only, and crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour, so it can come first if you want lighter teeth. Getting the order of treatment right explains why.
