Chipped Tooth Repair with Composite Bonding

For anyone with a chipped tooth considering composite bonding, this page covers what a repair can fix in one visit, size limits, when a crown or onlay is needed instead, the appointment, matching one tooth's colour, lifespan and cost. In short, composite bonding usually suits chips that leave most of the tooth in place, and a crown or onlay may be considered when much more is missing.

What can composite bonding repair in one visit?

A suitable chipped tooth can be bonded in a single visit, with tooth-coloured composite resin bonded onto the break and shaped to match. Chip repair is one use of composite bonding.

In general, an enamel fracture breaks only the hard outer layer, while a deeper chip causes dentine exposure, uncovering the layer beneath. Trauma guidelines from the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) list composite repairs for both depths.

Chip repair at Deepcar Dental Care

Composite bonding at Deepcar Dental Care includes edge bonding for a single chipped tooth. For direct bonding of one chipped tooth, the practice gives around 1 hour as typical chair time, in a single bonding visit; the figure varies by case.

How big a chip can composite bonding repair?

Composite bonding can usually repair a chip that leaves most of the tooth in place, in the enamel only or into the dentine.

The guidance on this page gives no cut-off in millimetres. What matters is how deep the chip goes, whether the nerve is involved and how much sound tooth is left around it, and only an examination can show that.

How far the chip goesRepairs the guidance lists
Enamel onlyBonding the broken piece back on if you have it, or, depending on the extent and location of the chip, smoothing the edge or a composite repair (IADT)
Into the dentine, nerve not exposedBonding the broken piece back on if it is intact, or covering the exposed dentine with a bonding agent and composite, or with glass ionomer (IADT)
A badly broken tooth with the nerve exposedTreatment of the nerve first (IADT); NHS guidance says root canal treatment may be needed. This is urgent: call your dental practice or get advice from 111
A large part of the tooth broken awayA crown, which NHS guidance says can be fitted where a tooth has broken. If it is badly broken, this is urgent: call your dental practice or get advice from 111

In a 2015 meta-analysis of front-tooth composites, bulk fracture was the main reason repairs of a lost corner or edge (Class IV) were replaced.

The chipped front tooth page covers how serious a chip may be and other ways to fix it.

When is a crown or onlay needed instead of bonding?

A crown or onlay may be considered instead of bonding when a large part of the tooth is missing or already weakened.

NHS guidance describes a crown as a cap that completely covers a real tooth, and says that to fit one, the old tooth will need to be shaped first. The crowns page explains having a crown fitted for a tooth that needs full coverage.

For root-filled teeth, a 2025 systematic review of five studies found crowns and direct composites both had high short-term survival, with crowned teeth generally surviving better in longer follow-up, especially where much tooth was lost. Where studies reported it, the findings suggested teeth with one to three surfaces lost and walls preserved did well with bonded composite, while those with four or five lost, or a disrupted ferrule, benefited from cuspal coverage, meaning a crown or a partial-coverage restoration such as an onlay. The authors describe the evidence as limited.

Crowns, and composite and ceramic inlays and onlays, are among the restorative treatments offered at Deepcar Dental Care.

What happens at a chipped tooth bonding appointment?

A chipped tooth is generally bonded in this order: shade chosen, tooth prepared, composite built up in layers, then shaped and polished.

  • Shade first. In a UK randomised trial, teeth became lighter as they dried and had not returned to their shade within 30 minutes of rehydration, so the authors advise matching the shade first.
  • Bevelling. The enamel at the edge of the break may be given a short bevel, a gentle slope. In a 2015 meta-analysis, bevelling was associated with less deterioration of the restoration's shape, but not with less staining or less visible margins.
  • The adhesive protocol. The enamel is acid-etched and a bonding agent applied so the composite grips the tooth. The same meta-analysis found more staining and visible margins where enamel was etched with no bonding agent.
  • Layering. Composite is added in layers, each hardened with a curing light, to rebuild the missing part.
  • Finishing. The repair is shaped to match the neighbouring teeth and polished.

The page on what happens during composite bonding sets out each stage.

How is the colour matched on a single chipped tooth?

Colour is matched by choosing the composite shade against the neighbouring teeth, which one clinical article calls the hardest part of repairing a front tooth.

A clinical article on direct front-tooth restorations says hue, chroma, value, opacity, translucency, intensity and anatomy must all be seen to be reproduced. A 2022 article on restoring a single central incisor says predictable shade matching has proved hard to achieve, with light source, background colour and the observer's eye fatigue all affecting what is seen. The page on dental shade matching explains how tooth colour is measured and reproduced.

In general, NHS guidance says teeth whitening can only lighten the colour of natural teeth. At the practice, whitening before bonding is optional, and whitening first, then bonding, is one order offered.

For cosmetic work at Deepcar Dental Care, digital shade matching is used. With composite bonding, the technique is chosen to suit the case, and options include freehand sculpting, a silicone key made from a wax-up, injection moulding, layering several shades or a single shade.

How long does a bonded chip repair last?

The practice gives around five years as a realistic lifespan for direct composite bonding, depending on you, your oral hygiene and your habits.

A 2015 systematic review of front-tooth composite restorations found fracture of the tooth or restoration was the most common reason for failure, while failures of colour, shape and surface stain were more frequent where restorations were placed for aesthetic reasons.

Direct composite bonding at the practice comes with 12-month aftercare cover, covering repairs. Accidental trauma and infection are excluded.

For direct composite bonding, a professional re-polish is recommended every 6 months.

If you grind your teeth, a night guard is required with composite bonding at the practice, and it is charged separately.

What affects the cost of chipped tooth repair?

The cost of repairing a chipped tooth depends on the tooth and the repair it needs. Chipped tooth repair does not have its own line on the practice's current fee list, which gives "from" prices based on individual clinical needs. For composite bonding in general, the bonding cost page explains what it costs.

When should you speak to your dentist about a chipped tooth?

NHS guidance says to see a dentist if you have chipped, cracked or broken a tooth, and that a chip is usually not serious. Do not go to a GP, who cannot give dental treatment.

If a piece of the tooth has broken off, NHS guidance is to put it in milk or saliva and take it to a dentist, who may be able to glue it back on.

If a tooth is badly broken or knocked out, the NHS dental treatments page says to call your dental practice or get advice from 111, because such an adult tooth needs treating as soon as possible, within 30 minutes to 1 hour if possible. The emergency dentistry page explains what to do about a broken tooth.

What other composite bonding treatments are there?

Composite bonding treats more than chips, and the options in this section include composite veneers over the full front surface and gap closure.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chipped back tooth be repaired with composite bonding?

A small chip on a back tooth may be repaired with composite, while a larger loss may need a crown or onlay. NHS guidance says a chipped tooth can be smoothed down and filled or have a crown fitted. The page on inlays and onlays explains onlays.

Do you need an injection to bond a chipped tooth?

Direct composite bonding at Deepcar Dental Care usually needs no drilling and no injection. NHS guidance says a badly broken tooth where the nerves are exposed may need root canal treatment, and that a badly broken adult tooth needs treating as soon as possible: call your dental practice or get advice from 111.

Is chip repair the same as edge bonding?

Chip repair and edge bonding overlap. Chip repair rebuilds the broken part of a tooth, while edge bonding adds composite along the biting edges of front teeth, for one chipped tooth or across several. A chip on the biting edge of a front tooth can be repaired this way, and incisal edge bonding has its own page.
