Technology and Materials in Restorative Dentistry

This page is for anyone curious about dental technology in fillings, crowns and root canal treatment. It lists the equipment on site at Deepcar Dental Care and introduces two pages, on root canal instruments and on digital scanning and design. In published research, a 2014 study linked rubber dam to higher survival of root-treated teeth; a 2015 Cochrane review found no qualifying trials of magnification in root canal treatment.

What does the restorative technology section cover?

This section on restorative dentistry technology covers equipment and digital methods used in root canal treatment and in making restorations such as crowns. It does not explain individual treatments or costs, and how restoration materials are chosen is explained in the guide to restoring damaged teeth.

Which pages does the restorative technology section hold?

This dental technology section holds two pages, one for each topic below.

Instruments for root canal treatment

A 2014 Journal of Endodontics study of over 500,000 teeth concluded that using a rubber dam during a first root canal treatment could provide a higher tooth survival rate. All three are explained on the page about rubber dam, rotary instruments and apex location.

Digital scanning and design

A 2018 Journal of Prosthodontics review concluded that digital impressions are a clinically acceptable alternative to conventional ones for crowns and short bridges, but still recommended conventional impressions for full-arch work. Scanning is explained further on the page about intraoral scanning and computer-designed restorations.

Frequently asked questions

What does research say about patients' views of digital impressions?

A 2018 systematic review in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry found only five studies that met its criteria. The authors noted a lack of clinical studies on patient outcomes. They concluded that current evidence suggests patients are more likely to prefer the digital workflow to conventional impression techniques.

Does rubber dam matter for fillings as well as root canal treatment?

It may, but in a 2021 Cochrane review the evidence was weak. It found low-certainty evidence that using rubber dam for direct fillings may lead to a lower failure rate than cotton rolls at six months. At later time points the evidence was very uncertain.

What did a Cochrane review find about magnification in root canal treatment?

A 2015 Cochrane review of magnification devices in root canal treatment, such as surgical microscopes and loupes, found no trials that met its criteria. It concluded that it is unknown if and how the type of magnification device affects the treatment outcome.
