Composite Bonding After Braces or Aligners: Timing and Retention

This page is for people who have had braces or clear aligners and want composite bonding to finish the result. It covers why tooth movement usually comes first, what affects timing, retainers, finishing touches, whitening, limits and cost. In short, timing depends on settled gums and stable teeth, and bonding does not replace a retainer.

Why is orthodontic treatment usually finished before composite bonding?

Orthodontic treatment usually comes first because braces and aligners move teeth, while composite bonding changes their shape without moving them. NHS hospital guidance on missing teeth describes reshaping teeth with tooth-coloured composite stuck onto them.

A 2015 study of 30 patients, in which 10 of 147 composite additions failed over 4 years, concluded that composite following fixed braces may be an excellent, minimally invasive way to correct differences in tooth size and form.

Our page on whether to straighten or disguise crooked front teeth compares the two approaches.

How long should you wait after braces or aligners before composite bonding?

Timing depends on how your gums and teeth settle once orthodontic treatment ends, so it varies from person to person.

Gums can take time to settle after fixed braces. In a 2010 study of 25 patients, gum swelling from fixed brace treatment was, on average, back to its pre-treatment level within 3 months of removal. A 2025 study of 14 adults found the gum between the lower front teeth still reducing at 21 days, when follow-up ended; its authors say it seems reasonable to postpone surgery that reduces gum volume for at least 21 days. NHS guidance says to contact the team treating your braces if you have braces and your gums are very red, swollen or painful.

Waiting has a limit too. The authors of a 2024 case report note that it is relatively common for spaces between teeth to reopen during the retention phase, particularly if veneers are delayed.

Both gum studies involved fixed braces; neither looked at aligners or bonding. Ask the dentist planning your bonding how long to leave in your case.

What does composite bonding mean for your retainer?

Composite bonding adds material onto the teeth, so if you wear a removable retainer, ask your dentist whether it will still fit. The British Orthodontic Society says almost every patient who has had orthodontic treatment needs to wear retainers.

One NHS trust leaflet on removable retainers explains that its laboratory keeps a digital record of the teeth as they were when the braces came off, for replacements, and that a new scan is needed if the retainers have not been worn and the teeth have moved. In one published case where veneers followed orthodontic treatment, the clear retainer was fitted after the zirconia veneers.

Retainer types and wear are covered on our page on keeping your teeth in their new position. Why teeth shift after treatment is explained on our page about relapse after braces.

What finishing touches can composite bonding add after orthodontics?

Composite bonding can finish an orthodontic result by changing the size or shape of teeth that are straight but still look uneven. In general, finishing touches include:

  • small gaps left after treatment: in a 2015 study of 30 patients, 137 of 147 composite additions after fixed braces were gap closures; see our page on closing gaps with composite bonding
  • reshaping teeth whose size or form does not match their neighbours
  • black triangles, the dark spaces near the gum between teeth, which our page on closing black triangles with composite explains

Should you whiten your teeth before composite bonding?

If you want lighter teeth, whitening is usually done before composite bonding, because NHS guidance says whitening can only lighten the colour of natural teeth.

Laboratory research suggests a wait: a 2021 review of 52 laboratory studies concluded that whitening impairs the bond of adhesives to teeth and that this effect persists for two weeks. Our page on getting the order of treatment right covers the sequence, and our clear aligner section covers finishing your result after treatment.

What are the limits and risks of composite bonding after orthodontics?

Composite bonding cannot change where teeth sit, and it bonds to enamel that braces and their removal may have marked or roughened. In general:

  • Enamel after braces: brackets are attached with dental glue, and a 2014 systematic review stated that no technique then removed the leftover adhesive without any damage to the enamel surface.
  • White spot lesions: white marks where enamel has lost minerals around brackets. In a 2026 trial of 150 patients aged 14 to 20, they showed more than a 50% spontaneous reduction in the year after fixed braces came off. Ask your dentist to check any white marks before bonding.
  • Chipping: in a 2021 study of 53 patients followed for an average of 5 years, composite added after orthodontic treatment showed good clinical performance with few failures, most of them repairable. Chipping, the most frequent problem, affected 13.6% of gap closures and 1.7% of reshaped teeth; wear came next, also more common in gap closures.

If you grind your teeth, our page on composite bonding and teeth grinding covers what that means.

How is composite bonding planned at Deepcar Dental Care?

At Deepcar Dental Care, composite bonding is provided by our cosmetic dentists, and a mock-up in the mouth shows the planned shape before you commit.

For composite bonding, gum disease and decay are treated first, and whitening before bonding is optional. The stages are set out in what happens during composite bonding.

How much does composite bonding cost?

Fees for composite bonding are set out on our page on what composite bonding costs. The practice's fee list says all its prices are “from” prices, based on individual clinical needs.

Our finance page covers spreading the cost of treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Can composite bonding be done while braces or aligners are still on?

Usually it waits until tooth movement has finished, because composite changes the shape of teeth, not their position. In one 2024 case report, the upper front brackets and wire were temporarily removed so composite could be added, then refitted to continue fine-tuning. Which order suits you depends on your treatment plan.

Will composite bonding stop my teeth moving back after braces?

No. Composite bonding changes the shape of teeth, not where they sit, so it does not replace a retainer. The British Orthodontic Society says teeth tend to want to move back towards their original positions, and that wearing retainers long-term can reduce age changes in tooth position.

What if my teeth have moved since my braces came off?

It depends how far they have moved. The authors of a 2024 case report note that small amounts of leftover spacing can be resolved with veneers, while more significant relapse of space may require orthodontic re-treatment. A dentist can assess whether composite alone suits, or whether the teeth need moving first.

Is composite bonding after braces available on the NHS?

Usually not when it is cosmetic. NHS guidance says you can get dental treatment on the NHS if you need it to keep your mouth and teeth healthy, and you will usually need to get cosmetic treatments privately. It also says braces are usually only free for under-18s with a problem with their teeth.

Are black triangles common after braces?

In adults, yes. A 2001 study of 337 adults found open spaces near the gum between teeth, known as black triangles, in 38% after orthodontic treatment. They were linked to a larger distance between the bone and the contact point, divergent roots and triangular crown shapes.
