Whitening in Barnsley sits at two extremes. Dental practices in the town typically charge £250 to £350 for a home kit, often as a half-price promotion that reverts to a higher list price, and most add a separate examination fee. At the other end, beauty salons and mobile operators advertise whitening from £99. Those salon offers are illegal in the UK, because anything above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide may only be supplied by a GDC-registered dentist, and the products they use tend to be either too weak to work or acidic enough to roughen enamel.
Barnsley patients usually find us in one of two ways: they already travel to us for something else, often because NHS waits pushed them to look for a private dentist, or a friend from Penistone or Stocksbridge sent them. What they get here is a fixed fee that includes the trays, gel and review, a £85 examination with X-rays, seven-day opening until 8pm, and one dentist from first look to final shade. Honest answer: one to three years for most people, and the spread is mostly down to what you drink. Here is why, and what you can do about it.
Whitening does not paint the tooth. The gel releases oxygen that passes through the enamel and breaks the long, dark stain molecules in the dentine into smaller, colourless ones. Nothing stops new stain arriving afterwards. Tea, coffee, red wine and curry all leave tannins and pigments on the enamel, and over months they seep in again. Dentine also yellows naturally with age, which is slower but relentless. So whitening is more like a good decorating job than a permanent change: it lasts well if you look after it.
Because you keep your custom trays, maintenance is one or two nights of gel every three to four months, not a new course. A single syringe lasts most patients a year of top-ups. Enlighten patients tend to need less, because the in-practice session takes them to the brightest natural shade, so the drift starts from a higher point. Either way, the trays should be kept and checked at your routine examinations; if a filling or tooth position changes, they may need remaking, which we will tell you at the time.

No. Whitening is cosmetic and is not provided on the NHS anywhere, even at practices that hold an NHS contract. It is private everywhere, including here.
Legally, only a GDC-registered dentist can supply gel above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. Salon products are either too weak to work or acidic enough to damage enamel, and there is no examination first.
Nearer the one-year end than three. A top-up night every few months with your existing trays keeps the shade where you want it for very little cost.
One or two nights every three to four months is plenty for most people. Whitening more often than that adds sensitivity without adding brightness.
