Glossop sits on the Derbyshire side of the Pennines and most of its dental traffic runs west towards Manchester. The town's own practices do offer whitening, and one publishes a fair price of around £350 for a home kit with a consultation and a follow-up, but on weekdays only, and without saying what kind of staining the kit will and will not shift. That last point matters more than the price. Whitening is superb for some discolouration and nearly useless for others, and the difference is worth knowing before you pay anyone.
We are 40 minutes east over the Woodhead Pass, in Deepcar on the Sheffield side. Our home whitening is £350, Enlighten is £550, and the new patient examination is £85 with X-rays. We are open until 8pm seven days a week, which for a Glossop patient means a Saturday morning drive over the tops rather than a weekday afternoon off, and free parking is directly outside. Dr Ibraheem Ijaz examines you, tells you which kind of staining you have, and only then recommends a system.
The rough rule: yellow and brown whiten well, grey whitens slowly, and anything that is not natural tooth does not whiten at all. Here is the detail.
The easiest kind. Pigments sit on and just inside the enamel. A hygiene visit removes the layer on top and whitening gel breaks down what has soaked in beneath. Responds well to the home system in two to three weeks; smokers hold the result less long.
Enamel thins over the decades and the dentine underneath, which is naturally yellow, thickens and darkens. Whitening works on that dentine directly and is very effective for age-related yellowing, often more so than people expect. This is where most patients over fifty get their best result.
Antibiotics taken in childhood while the teeth were forming can leave grey or blue-grey horizontal bands. The pigment is deep in the dentine and whitening reaches it slowly. Enlighten, with its longer home phase and in-practice finish, gives the best chance; even so, the result is often partial, and we say that at the examination rather than after. Veneers are the alternative for heavy banding.
A single tooth darker than its neighbours has usually lost its nerve, often after a knock. Blood pigments leak into the dentine from inside. Tray whitening barely touches it; it needs root canal treatment and then whitening from inside the tooth, which we do here.
Chalky flecks from childhood fluoride or from fixed braces are not stain but a difference in enamel structure. Whitening lightens the enamel around them and reduces the contrast a little, and for a few days can make them stand out more. They do not disappear with gel; if they bother you, that is a separate treatment conversation.
Grey shadow through a front tooth is often an old silver filling or a metal post showing through thin enamel. No gel changes that; the filling or crown needs replacing. Likewise white fillings, veneers and crowns keep their colour, so we check every front tooth for them before you start.

Take the A628 east out of Glossop over the Woodhead Pass past the reservoirs to the Flouch roundabout, then the A616 down the Stocksbridge bypass. Leave at the Deepcar junction and turn onto Manchester Road (A6102); we are at number 334, on the main road with free parking directly outside. Allow 40 minutes in good weather. Partly, and slowly. Tetracycline staining is deep in the dentine; Enlighten gives the best chance and veneers are the alternative if the result is not enough.
