Why Glossop patients cross the Woodhead Pass for bonding

Glossop’s own bonding page is better than most: it is honest that composite is not as strong as a natural tooth, it recommends a yearly repolish and a guard for grinders, and it lasts five to seven years. What it lacks is the practical stuff. No price, no appointment length, no named dentist, and the advice to avoid tea, coffee and wine ‘ideally permanently’, which nobody follows and which is not necessary with a polished surface.

Deepcar is on the Yorkshire side of the Woodhead Pass, 40 minutes from Glossop along the A628 and A616. Patients from Glossop, Hadfield, Tintwistle and Padfield come because the price is £300 per tooth in writing, the planning visit is a £85 examination, and we open 8am to 8pm seven days a week, so both trips can be weekend mornings when the pass is quiet. One dentist plans and places the work. Free parking is directly outside.

Composite bonding in two trips: the full timeline

Crossing the Pennines for dentistry means planning the visits, so here is the whole sequence for a typical case of four upper front teeth, from your first message to the finished result.

Day 0: photographs by WhatsApp. Send a daylight photo of your smile and a close-up with teeth together to +44 7438 552 581. Within the day we reply with whether bonding suits you, roughly how many teeth, and whether whitening first makes sense. If the honest answer is aligners or a veneer, you hear it now, before the pass.

Trip one, about 40 minutes in the chair: planning. The £85 examination covers a look at the teeth, gums and bite, photographs, an intraoral scan and a screen mock-up of the proposed shapes. We take a shade with the teeth wet under daylight-balanced light. You leave with a written plan and fixed price, and if you want whitening, a set of custom trays and gel to use at home. Nothing is bonded on this visit.

Days 1 to 14 at home: whitening, if chosen. Trays worn nightly for around two weeks. Then a fortnight’s pause, because bleached enamel holds oxygen that weakens a fresh bond and because the shade settles slightly darker than its brightest point. Bonding is matched to the settled shade, not the peak.

Trip two, about two hours in the chair: bonding. Teeth kept dry under a rubber sheet, enamel etched for around 20 seconds, bonding agent light-cured, then each tooth built in a dentine shade and an enamel shade, about 15 to 20 minutes a tooth. The bite is checked on marking paper and the surfaces polished. You drive home with the finished result and no numbness; most bonding needs no injection.

Week one at home. Eat normally from day two. Tea and coffee are fine from the start; the surface is sealed. If an edge feels sharp or high, ring us; a two-minute adjustment is worth the trip.

Every six months. A polish with the hygienist, here or in Glossop, keeps the gloss up. Grinders wear a night guard from the start.

Years five to seven. Expect a chip or two over that time, repaired in one short visit by adding to the existing composite. The total for four teeth is £1,200 plus £85. The composite bonding page describes the technique in more depth.

Composite bonding fees for Glossop patients

The bonding can be spread over 6 to 18 months at 0% through Tabeo, or up to 60 months at 10.9% APR representative, subject to status; see our finance page and fee list.

Over the Woodhead Pass to Deepcar

Take the A628 out of Glossop past Tintwistle and along the reservoirs, over the Woodhead Pass to the Flouch crossroads, then the A616 down the Stocksbridge bypass. Leave at the Stocksbridge junction and follow Manchester Road down the valley towards Sheffield; we are at 334 Manchester Road on the right, about 40 minutes in good conditions. The pass closes in heavy snow, so book with an eye on the forecast in winter. Parking is free directly outside and the surgeries are on the ground floor.

Questions, answered

Composite bonding: questions from Glossop patients

What if the Woodhead Pass is shut on the day of my appointment?

Ring us and we will move it, no charge. The alternative route via the M67, M60 and M62 is much longer, so we would rather rebook for a clear day.

Can Glossop patients do planning and bonding in a single trip?

For one or two teeth with no whitening, yes, if you send photographs first and ask when booking. For four or more, or with whitening, two trips gives a better result.

Do I really have to give up coffee after bonding?

No. A well-polished surface resists stain for years; a six-monthly polish takes care of the rest. Avoid abrasive whitening toothpastes, which scratch it.

How long does the bonding appointment take?

About two hours for four teeth, less for a single chip. You leave with the finished result and no numbness.

I have a missing tooth as well. Does the timeline change?

Bonding will not fill a gap. An implant is a separate course of a few months; see implants for Glossop patients.

What if a bonded tooth chips and I cannot get over the pass?

A chip can wait a day or two. When you can travel, we hold emergency slots every day and repair it in one visit.

Absolutely amazing experience! From the moment I walked in, I felt completely at ease. I’ve always been a bit nervous about dental visits, but they were so kind, patient, and professional. The whole procedure was quick and painless. I walked out with a smile — both literally and figuratively. 10/10!

I have been looked after at the practice for many years. Over twenty years later my porcelain veneers are still going strong. Affordable and friendly service. Highly recommend.
