Why Sheffield patients drive out of the city for bonding

Sheffield has no shortage of clinics offering bonding, and most of their pages say the same three things: one visit, no drilling, natural results. What they mostly leave out is the number. Where a price is shown it is usually a ‘from’ figure somewhere between £250 and £375 a tooth, with the real quote held back until you have paid for a consultation. Named clinicians are rare, and Saturday hours are short.

Deepcar is a 25-minute drive north-west of the city centre, and patients from Crookes, Hillsborough, Walkley and the S10 postcodes make the trip regularly. They come for a flat £300 per tooth that is written down before anything starts, a consultation folded into the new patient examination, appointments from 8am to 8pm seven days a week, and free parking at the door. The dentist who plans your shapes is the one who places them. More than 400 Google reviews at 5.0 suggest it holds up.

What a good bonding result actually looks like

Bonding is judged in daylight, at conversation distance, by people who do not know you have had it. That is the standard we plan for, and a good result has a few recognisable features.

The edges have translucency. A natural front tooth is not one flat colour: the biting edge is slightly see-through and the neck near the gum is warmer and more opaque. We layer a dentine-shade composite first, then a thinner enamel shade over it, so light passes through the edge the way it does through your own tooth. Bonding done in a single opaque shade is the reason some smiles look like painted fence panels.

The proportions follow your face. The two central incisors should be the widest and longest, the laterals a little narrower and about half a millimetre shorter, the canines slightly darker and set back. Bonding that makes every tooth the same size reads as false even when the colour is right. We check the new edge line against your lower lip when you smile; it should follow that curve rather than sit flat.

The gum line is untouched. Closing a gap by adding width low down on the tooth can leave a small dark triangle at the gum or a ledge that traps food. The composite has to be shaped so floss still slips through and the gum sits snugly against it.

The bite still works. After polishing we check your teeth together on marking paper thinner than a human hair. A high spot you cannot feel in the chair becomes a chip within a month.

It is not too white. If you want brighter teeth, we whiten first and match the composite to the settled shade two weeks later. Composite does not bleach, so whitening afterwards leaves it looking dull next to your own enamel.

We use an intraoral scanner and photographs at the planning visit so you can see the proposed shapes before any resin is mixed. The full treatment description is on our composite bonding page.

Questions, answered

Composite bonding: questions from Sheffield patients

Is composite bonding cheaper in Sheffield city centre or in Deepcar?

City clinics that publish a figure tend to quote from £250 to £375 a tooth, with the consultation charged on top. Ours is £300 per tooth with the consultation included in an £85 examination, and the total is written down before you decide.

Can I get to Deepcar from Sheffield without a car?

Yes. Take the Supertram to Middlewood, then the 57 or 57a bus along Manchester Road, which stops near the practice. Allow about 45 minutes door to door from the city centre.

How long does bonding last?

Typically five to seven years, often longer if you avoid biting nails, pens and ice. Chips are repaired by adding fresh composite to the existing work, usually in one short visit.

Should I whiten my teeth before bonding?

If you want a brighter shade, yes, and at least two weeks before. Composite is matched to whatever shade your enamel is on the day and cannot be bleached later.

Can bonding replace a missing tooth?

No. Bonding adds to a tooth that is still there. For a gap where a tooth has gone, read our page on dental implants for Sheffield patients.

What if I chip bonded tooth on a weekend?

Ring us. We are open 8am to 8pm every day and hold emergency slots; a chipped edge is normally smoothed or rebuilt the same day.

Absolutely amazing experience! From the moment I walked in, I felt completely at ease. I’ve always been a bit nervous about dental visits, but they were so kind, patient, and professional. The whole procedure was quick and painless. I walked out with a smile — both literally and figuratively. 10/10!

I have been looked after at the practice for many years. Over twenty years later my porcelain veneers are still going strong. Affordable and friendly service. Highly recommend.
