Sheffield has plenty of whitening on offer. Clinics in the city centre and the western suburbs typically quote somewhere between £295 and £460 for custom-tray home whitening, and several list Enlighten without putting a number next to it. Most publish a starting price rather than a total, so the figure you are quoted at the chair can be higher once the examination, the trays and the gel are added up.
We do it differently. Our two whitening fees are fixed and include the trays, the gel, the review visit and, for Enlighten, the in-practice session. The only extra is the £85 new patient examination, which you need anyway because whitening on top of decay or gum disease is uncomfortable and gives a patchy result. The practice is open 8am to 8pm seven days a week, so a Sheffield patient can have the tray-fitting visit on a Sunday morning rather than taking time off work, and there is free parking directly outside.
Whitening gel is not expensive. What you are paying for is the dentist's examination, the fit of the trays and the strength of gel a dentist is legally allowed to prescribe. Understanding that helps you compare quotes properly.
In the UK, whitening products containing more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only be supplied by a GDC-registered dentist, after an examination, up to a maximum of 6% hydrogen peroxide (or the equivalent 16% carbamide peroxide). That is why shop kits and online strips barely work: they are capped at 0.1%. It is also why beauty-salon whitening is illegal. A dentist-supervised kit is around sixty times stronger than anything you can buy over the counter, and that difference is most of what you are paying for.
A tray that fits only your teeth holds the gel against the enamel and away from the gum. A one-size tray lets gel leak onto the gums, where it stings, and lets saliva dilute it, so it whitens less. We scan your teeth with an intraoral scanner and have trays made from that scan. The trays are yours to keep, which is what makes a top-up cheap later on.
Our custom home whitening system (£350) is two to three weeks of nightly gel in your own trays and lifts most patients several shades. Enlighten (£550) adds an in-practice session at the end of the home phase and is the system we recommend when you want to reach the brightest natural shade predictably, for example before a wedding or before composite bonding on your front teeth. The extra £200 buys predictability rather than a different chemistry.
You do not need laser or light treatment; the light mostly warms the gel and the evidence that it adds anything lasting is weak. You do not need a second full course a year later; a top-up with your existing trays and a syringe of gel does the job. And you do not need whitening on crowns, veneers or fillings, because gel does not change them. If a front tooth has an old filling, it may need replacing to match your new shade, and we will tell you that before you start, not after.
