Stocksbridge has a dental practice of its own, but it is part of a large chain, runs office hours Monday to Friday and does not publish a whitening price online; you are invited to book a consultation to find out. For a lot of people in Stocksbridge that is the sticking point. If you work shifts at the steelworks, or you are behind a counter at Fox Valley until six, a practice that closes at five is hard to reach.
Deepcar Dental Care is a mile and a half down the A6102, open 8am to 8pm every day including Sundays, and we publish our whitening fees: £350 for our custom home system and £550 for Enlighten. The same dentist examines you, prescribes the gel, fits your trays and reviews the result, so nothing gets lost between appointments. Whitening is a short course rather than a single appointment. Here is exactly what happens, so you can plan it around work.
Whitening gel finds any weak spot. If it seeps into a cavity or an exposed root it stings badly, and if gums are inflamed they bleed and sting. So the first visit is a proper look, with X-rays, at your teeth and gums. We record your starting shade against a shade guide, photograph your front teeth, and note any fillings, crowns or veneers on the teeth that show when you smile, because those will not change colour. If you need a hygiene visit or a small filling first, we say so here. Then the intraoral scanner takes a digital impression of both arches. No trays of putty. This visit is our £85 new patient examination.
Your trays come back from the lab, made from your scan, and we check they seat fully and do not press on the gum. We show you how much gel to use: a small dot in each tooth space, about the size of a grain of rice, not a full squeeze. Too much gel spills onto the gums and wastes the syringe. You go home with the trays, the gel and written instructions. Most patients wear the trays overnight; the daytime alternative is about an hour and a half.
You whiten nightly. The gel does not bleach the surface of the tooth; it releases oxygen that passes through the enamel and breaks apart the stain molecules in the dentine underneath, which is why the colour change is gradual and even rather than a chalky surface layer. If you notice cold sensitivity, skip a night and use the sensitivity gel we give you. Enlighten patients also use a serum toothpaste through this phase.
Home-system patients come back for a ten-minute review and a final shade record. Enlighten patients have an in-practice session of about an hour to finish the course, then the review. You keep the trays, so a top-up in a year or two is just a syringe of gel.

Head out of Stocksbridge along Manchester Road towards Sheffield. Pass the Fox Valley roundabout, continue through Deepcar village, and the practice is at 334 Manchester Road, set back from the road with free parking directly in front. Door to door from the steelworks gate it is about five minutes; from Fox Valley it is nearer three. Surgeries are on the ground floor with step-free access. Yes. We book whitening visits up to 8pm every day, including Saturday and Sunday, so days and nights both fit around us.
Three for most people: examination and scan, tray fitting, then a review. Enlighten adds an in-practice session at the end, which can be combined with the review.
No. Whitening is cosmetic and is never available on the NHS anywhere in the UK, so it is a private fee at every practice, ours included.
Not usually. Once your trays exist, a top-up is a syringe of gel that we can hand you at a routine check-up.
Pause for a night, use the desensitising gel we supply and carry on. Sensitivity settles within a few days of finishing and does not damage the tooth.
No. Fillings, crowns and veneers keep their colour. We tell you at the examination if any of yours would look darker afterwards.
