Huddersfield practices tend to publish a whitening price, usually £300 to £375, and several offer a one-hour in-surgery session with a light. Most promise a number of shades and offer 0% over twelve months. What almost none of them tell you is what to do afterwards, and aftercare is where whitening is won or lost. A course that fades in six months because nobody mentioned the first 48 hours, or trays that warped in hot water, is money wasted.

Whitening changes the colour of dentine under the enamel. Keeping it depends on three things: what happens in the first two days, how you treat your trays, and a light top-up routine. None of it is hard.
For about two days after a whitening session the enamel is more porous than usual, because the oxygen released by the gel has opened the tiny channels in its surface. Stain gets in more easily. So during the course, and for two days after the last session, keep to food and drink that would not stain a white shirt: water, milk, white fish, chicken, rice, pasta, bananas. Tea, coffee, red wine, curry, beetroot and tomato sauce wait. If you must have coffee, a straw and a rinse with water afterwards limit the damage.
Many patients feel some cold sensitivity during the course, usually a sharp twinge that lasts a second or two. Brush with a sensitive toothpaste for a week before you start and throughout, brush before whitening rather than straight after, and if a night is uncomfortable, skip the next one. We supply a desensitising gel to use in the trays on rest nights. Enlighten patients use a serum toothpaste for the same reason. Sensitivity stops within a few days of the course ending and does not harm the tooth. If you see a white patch on the gum, gel has touched it; it fades within an hour and means you are using too much.
Rinse the trays in cold water after each use, brush them gently with a soft brush and no toothpaste, dry them and keep them in their case. Never hot water, never the dishwasher, never the dashboard of the car in summer: the plastic warps at kettle temperatures and a warped tray leaks gel onto your gums. Bring the trays to your routine examinations so we can check they still fit; a new filling on a front tooth can mean a tray needs remaking.
Most people hold their shade for one to three years. When you notice it slipping, one or two nights of gel in your existing trays brings it back; you do not repeat the course. Tea and coffee drinkers top up every three to four months, others once a year. A hygiene visit twice a year lifts surface stain and makes the whitening look newer for longer, which is why we suggest one before you start.

Leave Huddersfield on the A616 through Honley and New Mill, climb over the moor past the Flouch roundabout, and drop down the Stocksbridge bypass. Leave at the Deepcar junction and turn onto Manchester Road (A6102); we are at number 334, on the main road with free parking directly outside.
