Wakefield's private practices are fairly open about price: home whitening kits are typically listed at £395 to £400, sometimes with a small separate fee for the check beforehand, and long 0% plans are common. What is missing from almost every page is any mention of the downsides. Claims like 'thirty times stronger than shop kits' are true, because shop products are capped by law at 0.1% hydrogen peroxide and a dentist can prescribe up to 6%, but stronger gel is exactly why sensitivity, gum irritation and mismatched fillings need talking about.
We are 40 minutes down the M1 in Deepcar. Our fees are a little lower, £350 for home whitening and £550 for Enlighten, and our new patient examination is £85 including X-rays. We open until 8pm every day of the week, and the dentist who examines you is the one who reviews you. But the reason to read on is not the price. It is that we tell you what can go wrong, because patients who know that are the ones who end up pleased. Our reviews reflect that.
The most common complaint. Oxygen from the gel passes through enamel and irritates the nerve slightly, and cold drinks twinge for a second or two. It peaks in the first few days, is worse if you overfill the trays, and stops within days of finishing. Custom trays, a sensitive toothpaste beforehand and a rest night when needed keep it manageable; Enlighten adds a serum toothpaste for the same reason. It does not damage the tooth, but it is real.
Gel lightens enamel and dentine only. If you have a white filling or a crown on a front tooth that matched before, it will look darker after. Replacing a front filling is £150 to £220 and a crown is £750 or more, so that cost belongs in the plan before you start, not as a surprise. We check every front tooth at the examination for exactly this.
One to three years is the honest range. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking shorten it. The saving grace is that you keep your trays, so a top-up is a night or two of gel every few months, not another course.
Trays in nightly for two to three weeks, pale food and drink through the course and for two days after, and the trays cleaned in cold water. People who skip nights get patchy results. If that routine will not fit your life right now, wait until it will.
Small chalky flecks that some people have had since childhood lighten faster than the enamel around them, so for a few days they stand out. They blend back as the rest catches up. We warn you if we see them.
Whitening beyond your natural endpoint does not make teeth whiter; it makes the biting edges translucent and faintly blue-grey. That is why the course has an end and why we record the shade at the review rather than sending you home with a year's worth of gel.
Grey banding from tetracycline in childhood lightens slowly and partially. A single grey tooth with a dead nerve needs root canal treatment and whitening from the inside instead. We tell you which you have before you pay.

For most people a brief twinge with cold drinks in the first few days. Rest nights and the desensitising gel we supply keep it in check, and it stops soon after the course ends.
Only if a front filling that matched before looks dark afterwards. We tell you at the examination which fillings would be affected and what replacing them costs.
Dentist-prescribed gel at the legal strength does not. Enamel damage comes from acidic salon products and years of abrasive whitening toothpaste.
Whitening cannot go beyond your natural shade, so it looks like your own teeth. If a tooth stays dark or edges look translucent, we stop and deal with that tooth specifically.
