Wakefield’s bonding pages promise a lot. The leading one describes a treatment with ‘no permanent changes’ that is ‘completely reversible’ and ‘pain-free’, done in one visit and lasting five to seven years, with ‘flexible payment options’. There is no price on it. Where Wakefield clinics do publish a figure it can reach £495 a tooth. None of the pages mention a single drawback.
Deepcar is 40 minutes south, down the M1 to junction 35A and along the A616. Patients from Sandal, Horbury, Ossett and Outwood come to us partly for the fee, £300 per tooth in writing with the planning visit inside the new patient examination, and partly because we talk them out of bonding when it is wrong for them. One dentist plans and places it, we open 8am to 8pm seven days a week so the trip fits a weekend, and parking is free at the door.
We like bonding and do a lot of it. It still has real limitations, and you should hear them before you drive anywhere.
It is not quite reversible. Bonding removes no enamel, which is the honest part of that claim. But the enamel is etched with acid to a depth of a few microns to make the resin stick, and taking composite off later means polishing it away with a bur. The tooth is left very close to how it started, not identical. ‘No permanent changes’ overstates it.
It chips. Composite is softer than enamel and much softer than porcelain. Bonded edges chip on nails, pen lids and ice, and grinders chip them in their sleep. Expect at least one repair over the life of the bonding. Repairs are short and inexpensive, but they are a visit.
It stains, slowly. A polished surface resists tea and coffee for years, but composite is not glazed like porcelain and over time it dulls. A six-monthly polish keeps it bright; skip that and by year four it will look a shade darker than your enamel.
It cannot be whitened. Your teeth can. If you whiten later, the bonding stays where it was and stands out. Whiten first or accept the shade you have.
It cannot hide dark teeth. A thin layer of resin over a grey, root-filled tooth either shows the grey through or has to be built thick enough to look bulky. A ceramic veneer or crown is the honest answer there.
It is only as good as the day it was placed. Bonding done on a tooth that was not properly dry, or in one opaque shade, or without the bite checked, fails early and looks flat. The technique is unforgiving of shortcuts.
The comfort claim is close to true. Most bonding needs no injection. A chip close to the nerve, or an old filling that has to come out first, does. We tell you at the planning visit.
It lasts five to seven years, not for ever. That is a good return on £300 a tooth, but it is a maintenance treatment, and you should budget for a repolish or repair rather than be surprised by one. Because you know the price before you set off, you know the downsides before you pay, and the appointment can be on a Sunday. Wakefield prices where published run higher, and few pages mention a drawback.
Yes, and it happens. If the teeth are too dark, too broken down or the bite is too heavy, you leave with that advice and £85 spent, not a treatment you will regret.
Ideally a polish every six months, which any hygienist can do, and a repair if you chip an edge. Most Wakefield patients combine the polish with a weekend trip.
No enamel is drilled away. The surface is acid-etched by a few microns so the resin bonds, which is why it is nearly but not perfectly reversible.
