Composite bonding fifteen minutes from Penistone

Penistone has one practice offering bonding, a branch of a national chain on the High Street. Its page says the treatment takes ‘a couple of hours’ and gives ‘instant results’, and the patient reviews are warm. What it does not say is what those two hours involve, what it costs, whether you will be numb, how long it lasts or what to do afterwards. You are booking a treatment on the strength of adjectives.

Deepcar Dental Care is 15 minutes away down the A616 and Manchester Road, and Penistone is our closest market town, so a lot of our patients come from Thurlstone, Millhouse Green, Oxspring and Hoylandswaine. The fee is £300 per tooth, written down after a £85 planning examination, the same dentist does the planning and the bonding, and we open 8am to 8pm seven days a week. Free parking is outside the door, and everything is on the ground floor.

Your bonding appointment, minute by minute

Assume four upper front teeth, which is our most common case. The appointment is booked for around two hours. Here is where the time goes.

Minutes 0 to 15: shade and shapes. We take the shade with your teeth wet and under daylight-balanced light, before they dry out and look lighter than they are. We look again at the shapes we agreed on screen at the planning visit and mark the edge positions. If you whitened beforehand, this is where the match is set.

Minutes 15 to 25: isolation. A thin rubber sheet or cotton rolls and a suction tip keep the teeth dry. This is dull to sit through and it is the most important ten minutes of the appointment; wet enamel does not bond.

Minutes 25 to 30: preparing the surface. The enamel is lightly cleaned with pumice, then etched with a blue phosphoric acid gel for about 20 seconds and rinsed. Under a microscope the surface now looks like frost; the resin will lock into it. A bonding agent is painted on and set with the blue light for ten seconds. No drilling, and for most people no injection.

Minutes 30 to 105: building the teeth. Each tooth takes 15 to 20 minutes. A dentine-shade composite is placed first to give the body of the tooth its warmth, shaped with a flat instrument and a brush, then set with the light for 20 seconds. An enamel shade goes over it in a thinner layer to give the edge its translucency. Layers are kept to about two millimetres so the light cures them all the way through. Between the teeth a clear strip stops them bonding to each other.

Minutes 105 to 115: the bite. The dam comes off. You bite on marking paper thinner than a hair and slide side to side; any dark spot on the new composite is trimmed. You will not feel a high spot in the chair, but you would notice it chipping in a fortnight.

Minutes 115 to 120: polish. Discs from coarse to fine, then a rubber point and paste, until the surface shines like enamel. A well-polished surface is what resists stain. You leave with the finished result and no numbness. The composite bonding page has the outline for other cases.

Questions, answered

Composite bonding: questions from Penistone patients

Can I fit bonding in during a Penistone school run?

For one or two teeth, yes: allow an hour including parking. For four teeth book a two-hour morning or evening slot; we open 8am to 8pm every day.

Is there a bus from Penistone to Deepcar?

The community bus 23 runs to Stocksbridge, where the Sheffield-bound services along Manchester Road stop close to us. Most Penistone patients drive; it is 15 minutes.

Will I be numb afterwards?

Almost never. Bonding involves no drilling, so most people have no injection and can eat normally straight away, avoiding very hard foods for the first day.

Why does the appointment take two hours if bonding is quick?

Isolation, layering two shades per tooth, checking the bite and polishing all take time. Bonding done in twenty minutes a tooth is bonding with steps left out.

What if a tooth is missing rather than chipped?

Bonding cannot fill a gap where a tooth has gone. See implants for Penistone patients for the options.

What if bonded tooth chips on a weekend?

Ring us; we keep emergency slots every day and rebuild a chipped edge on the day in most cases.

Absolutely amazing experience! From the moment I walked in, I felt completely at ease. I’ve always been a bit nervous about dental visits, but they were so kind, patient, and professional. The whole procedure was quick and painless. I walked out with a smile — both literally and figuratively. 10/10!

I have been looked after at the practice for many years. Over twenty years later my porcelain veneers are still going strong. Affordable and friendly service. Highly recommend.
