Penistone is unusual for a small market town in having implant dentistry on its own high street, including practices that advertise same-day full-arch teeth. What you will struggle to find on any Penistone page is a price, a named implant dentist with a case count, or an explanation of what happens when the scan shows the bone is too thin. And thin bone is common: the ridge starts to shrink the day a tooth comes out, and for an old gap it is the question that decides the whole plan.
Deepcar Dental Care is a quarter of an hour down the road, nearer than Barnsley, and everything is under one roof: the CBCT scanner, the grafting, the sinus lifts and the implants themselves. Dr Ibraheem Ijaz has placed over 200 implants since 2022 and does the grafting himself, with visiting implant clinician Mohammed Anabtawi alongside him on the larger reconstructions. An implant needs a sleeve of solid bone at least a millimetre and a half thick on every side, so a standard 4 mm implant wants a ridge around 7 mm wide. Bone exists to hold teeth; once the tooth has gone, the body reabsorbs it, quickly in the first year and slowly ever after. A gap from 2015 can be half the width it was. Grafting puts that width back.
The cheapest graft is the one done on the day the tooth comes out. The empty socket is packed with granules of bone substitute, usually processed bovine bone that acts as a scaffold your own cells grow into, and covered with a collagen membrane. Three to four months later the ridge has kept most of its width and the implant goes in normally. From around £500.
If the gap is old, the graft is placed onto the side of the thin ridge and held under a membrane, sometimes with your own bone chips taken from nearby in the same jaw. Small deficiencies are grafted at the same time as the implant; larger ones are grafted first and left for four to six months. Also from around £500, with the exact figure on your written plan.
Your upper molars sit directly beneath the maxillary sinus, an air space in the cheekbone. When a molar is lost the sinus floor drops into the gap, and it is common to find only three or four millimetres of bone where a ten-millimetre implant needs to go. A sinus lift gently raises the membrane lining the sinus and packs bone substitute underneath. Where a few millimetres are needed, this is done through the implant hole itself (a crestal lift) at the same visit as placement. Where more is needed, a small window is opened in the side of the jaw (a lateral lift), and the site is left six to nine months before the implant. From around £1,000. The main risk is a small tear in the membrane, which is usually patched on the day and occasionally means waiting and trying again.

Head west out of Penistone on the A628 to the Flouch roundabout, then take the A616 down past Langsett Reservoir into Stocksbridge. Carry on through the town onto Manchester Road and the practice is at number 334, on the Deepcar side, about 15 minutes door to door. The lanes through Thurgoland and Wortley are the scenic alternative and take about the same time. There is free parking directly outside and everything is on the ground floor. Penistone has good dentists and you may be perfectly happy with one of them. Yes, though it takes longer. Buses run between Penistone and Stocksbridge, and Stagecoach services along Manchester Road stop close to the practice. Ask us when you book and we will suggest appointment times that fit the timetable.
The CBCT scan at your first visit shows the bone width and height in three dimensions. You will see it on screen and the plan will state in writing whether a graft or sinus lift is needed, what it costs, and how long it adds.
It is done under local anaesthetic, with sedation if you prefer, and most patients report swelling and a blocked-nose feeling for a few days rather than pain. You are asked not to blow your nose or sneeze with your mouth closed for two weeks.
Small grafts are placed at the same time as the implant, so no. Larger ridge grafts need four to six months, and a lateral sinus lift six to nine, before the implant can go in.
Most often a processed bovine bone mineral that acts as a scaffold, sometimes mixed with chips of your own bone from the same jaw. Synthetic materials are also available if you would prefer to avoid animal-derived products; tell us at the consultation.
